An open letter to the Kentucky Enquirer

Featured Replies

Do I need to bring up that the Enquirer in their infinate wisdom has a player for Pendleton County on the Boys side and AGAIN no coverage of Gallatin County?? I'm sure that players like Nate Edmondson and Cody Perkins are of the same caliber of player like those that made this list. If not make the team, at least Honorable Mention.

This is the e-mail that I sent to the Enquirer this morning.

"Hi,

I broadcast the games for Gallatin County High School. I was looking in the paper this morning and saw the listing of the Northern Kentucky High School Basketball All-Stars. I just have one question. If you are going to cover a school as far away as Pendleton County High School, which is 33.44 miles from the 312 Elm Building, then why can't you cover schools like Gallatin County (38.53 miles) or Grant County (35.32 miles) away from your offices. You even put Williamstown in your basketball scoreboard and that's even farther away than any of the rest at 40.23 miles.

When the Post goes away, there will be no coverage of these schools in the southern part of your reading area. As far as I know, they still sell the Enquirer in Warsaw and Dry Ridge as well as places like Owenton and Carrollton KY.

When Gallatin County's boys basketball team went to the All "A" State Tournament at EKU, you already had Ryan Ernst there. The only story about Gallatin County came when they played Brossart. That's just wrong.

Teams like Simon Kenton and Walton Verona are in the 8th region. It would be nice to see coverage of the other teams that they play as well. The schools like Gallatin County, Grant County and Owen County are more and more playing the schools from Northern Kentucky like Lloyd, Ryle, Ludlow, Newport, etc. Gallatin County's baseball team has just come off playing Holmes, St. Henry, Ludlow and Villa Madonna and are scheduled to play Bellevue, Calvary Christian, Simon Kenton and Lloyd.

I do appreciate your time. I'm just trying to get some coverage for these schools as well."

As I stated in the e-mail, they sell the Enquirer all over Northern Kentucky, they don't just stop at the end of the Boone, Kenton and Campbell County line.

The Preps editor is Jewell Walston. If you feel as I do, not just about the voting, but the coverage as well, the Enquirer needs to know about it.

No offense but less than 0.1% of the folks in NKY will care to follow the young men and women of Gallatin County. Pendleton County , for some reason, always has more of a following in NKY than Grant or Gallatin.

No one is going to pick up the newspaper simply to see if the GC boxscore is in it.

Its the way it is, my friend.

Thank you Buttels...the .1% from Carroll County agree!

Our Girls had the same issue this year. The Courier Journal picks it up but not the KE.

I think they underestimate the number of readers there are locally, after all it is the Kentucky Enquirer, I do not see the word Northern in the title.

No offense taken. It's more my way to try to get coverage for these teams. Gallatin, Owen, Carroll, Henry, Grant, Williamstown and even Walton for some get no press at all. I guess that's what happens when you sit in the middle of Cincinnati, Lexington and Louisville.

But they would sure cover an event at the Kentucky Speedway!!! 5 miles from the school

Its a greater Cincy paper and the 3 NKY counties are going to get the coverage. Period. The high school staff is already small so they are not going to a game to report on Carroll County/Gallatin vs. Owen County when there are many schools in NKY who will tell you that THEY do not get enough coverage.

Its simple economics.

If there were bigger and more local NASCAR tracks, they would not come to Warsaw.

And even more evidence is that Whitney Ballinger is playing in the OH-KY All Star game at Thomas More this weekend. Nothing mentioned about her either.

But when the Post goes away at the end of the year, the people who cover the schools mentioned above should be moving over to the Enquirer. I've sent that e-mail too.

That could be an incorrect assumption. Why would the Enquirer take on extra expense simply because the Post shut down?

The Enquirer was all over the story when a local official was arrested. What makes sports coverage any different. News is news. Do you think they will cover when Gallatin County plays Scott County the defending KY State Champion next year?? Probably not.

No, sensational news is news -- no matter how small the town. But everyday sports stories about small fringes of the reader-base are not going to pay for the ink and paper.

buttels, why do you think that the Enquirer's number 1 goal is covering ALL area sports? Like any other buisness, their primary goal is to make money, and I am sure that they have cost accountants (or something like that) projecting that sending someone to cover the games is not worth the costs.

It's a cynical view but it is the truth.

Because the Enquirer is the paper of record in the area. Not because I live in Cincinnati. If your reach is 40 miles in one direction which is it toward Williamstown, then the coverage should be in all directions, not just one.

In the case of the All "A" State tournament, their reporter was already there. The posts on his blog were well after Gallatin County played. Would it have hurt to do a story on another team that was already within their radius anyway??

Not that I'm just harping on about Gallatin County. I would be saying the same thing if Williamstown would have went or if Owen County won. They probably wouldn't have covered them either since they are 52 miles away.

It's not just high school sports either. Coverage of sports in general. There is a hockey team in Cincinnati that plays about 6-7 blocks from the Enquirer. They're in the playoffs. Do they get any coverage either?? No.

Since I broadcast high school sports, that's what I care about.

I really don't think the Enquirer is a very good high school sports newspaper, other than covering the GCL in football. The Courier-Journal in Louisville and the Lexington Herald are much better for high school basketball fans. Does Gallatin County have a local newspaper that covers their games?

As far as local newspapers that do a good job of covering their geographical area check out the Harlan Daily Enterprise, the Times Tribune in Corbin, the Ashland Independent, and the Georgetown News. All of these are online. They wont be covering Gallatin Co but I enjoy reading about teams all across the state.

There needs to be a Northern Kentucky daily paper.
