Freshman Baseball and Knothole

Featured Replies

With Freshman baseball becoming more and more popular and many 7th and 8th graders playing Freshman baseball, isn't there a KHSAA rule that prohibits a child from playing both Freshman and knothole at the same time? If so, what, if any, are the penalities....does anyone know?

Most school coaches do not want the kids playing for someone else during the school season . Teaching them something different against what the school coach does . Most school coaches are more expeienced than Knothole coaches .I believe Knothole also has something in the ethics part of the contract about playing for 2 teams at once .

If the kid played school ball why would you want them to play knothole anyway ? Maybe a select team would be the way to go .Alot of teams at that age have to wait till school is over to start the summer season .

I thought the KHSAA would have the problem before knothole would.

I don't know why one would want them to play both, my boy isn't and it doesn't make sense to me either. I just think that many 12/13 year old boys are going to be overwhelmed with 15/16 year old pitching. It could hurt the boys confidence and future development. Plus, I think that many will ride the pine while missing out on knothole games where they could be getting at bats and playing in games. It just doesn't make sense to me....

Knothole "A" league starts their season later than the younger kids so that the high school season is over before the Knothole season.

If you think your child would ride the pine as a 7th or 8th grader on the frosh team, I would direct him to a knothole or a select team (depending on his skill level) in which he would get more playing time and increase his skills in order to prepare him for HS ball, if that's what he wants. Many 12/13 yr old select teams start in mid to late March, and the regular knothole schedule will start in early April. Select will play 2 to 3 times more games than knothole.

The knothole rule reads no two teams except for school teams or something like that....but they can play for school teams at the same time. I am not sure what the KHSAA rule is though,,,,,,,,

You are correct on the part about Knothole not wanting a kid to play on any other team or league, but I don't think it pertaines to a school team.

Why would you not want them to play knothole baseball? Baseball is baseball. The talent level overall may not be as high, but the kid is still playing live baseball. Not all parents can afford for their kids to play select sports. It takes a lot of time and money to do so.

As for playing for two teams at once, knothole does have this rule, but it does not pertain to high school sports. When I played, there was actually a summer high school league for those either not playing any other organized baseball, or for those that wanted to play more. The high school coaches were not involved, and usually a player's parent coached. It was just a means of playing more organized baseball. Knothole considered this a high school league, and allowed me to play in both. Also, as cshs81 indicated, the 'A' and 'AA' seasons start later than instructional through 'B' ball to accomodate the kids playing high school ball. I'm not sure of the KHSAA ruling, but I'm sure they don't allow you to play for another team during the season.

Agree, agree, agree. I'm searching right now to see if there is a ruling I'm not aware of, but I THINK the outside participation rules only apply to Varsity and maybe JV teams. Not certain about that though and will look thouroughly. Kids get better by playing. Setting rules as to which team comes first and which practices come first are obviously important, but I personally believe kids need to play as much as possible. Yes, there are some problems with "daddy ball" in some cases, but I think in the long run, playing is better than not playing enough.

Case BL-8-4- Can participants in sports other than

football and basketball play for outside leagues

and/or teams?

There are no restrictions on the student-athletes in

sports other than football and basketball as it relates

to outside competition during the season. No member

of the coaching staff at the high school level may be

involved in the coaching of any student representative

of that school in outside competition. For example, the

baseball coach may not coach the baseball team in the

local Babe Ruth league during the school year or dead

period. In addition, the girls’ coach in a particular school

could not coach the boys’ team in a particular school

and vice-versa.

Here is the actual rule from the KHSAA handbook. It looks to me that it applies across the board to all athletes in baseball. Therefore it is at the discretion of the individual program as to if they allow their athletes to participate on outside teams.

I believe this rule, will be in effect for the '08 season, which doesn't allow a player to participate on an outside program, while playing for a school.

This was covered, at one of the coaches clinics I attended.

I heard the same thing but wasn't sure if that ruling was being enacted or just discussed.

I'm really surprised they allow it now as bulldog77 stated above. I can see both sides of the matter, especially when pitchers are involved. Speaking of pitchers, I think MLB should hold off on their tryouts until after the high school season. I know years ago, the Reds would hold one during the districts/regionals timeframe.

I don't have a copy with me, but Julian indicated this would be in effect, starting with the '08 season.

It will certainly force student-athletes, to choose now. I can foresee problems, in many areas with this.

Agreed. I already deal with some younger players choosing NOT to participate in freshman because they want to play with the local teams. This ruling does affect smaller schools if they are trying to field freshman teams using 8th and sometimes 7th graders to help fill the rosters.
