Powell County 85 Owsley County 68

Featured Replies

This game was much closer than the final score. The Owls were down 2 at the half, after leading most of it until late in the second quarter. The game was close throughout the third period with the Pirates holding a lead of around 5 to 7 points. Then the fourth quarter began and the Pirates converted a couple of 3's, got a 10 to 12 point lead, and Owsley was forced to foul. I don't know what Powell's free throw % was for the game, but they hit almost all of them. Plus, Kincer was hotter than a firecracker from the baseline. He hit 12 to 15 footers all night long.

I'm very proud of Owsley's players and coaches. They have hung in there through some rough times this year, but saved their best for end of the season. Coach Parrett has been very patient with this young, and inexperienced, team. They've slowly made progress every game this season. Tonight 6'4 sophomore Jeremy Congleton had a great game with 22 points, and 6'3 junior Adam McIntosh did likewise, and also had 22.

Trey Congleton was covered up by defense but scored 6 and ran the offense with few mistakes. Everyone gave it their best shot...Jeremy Brewer, Cam Manious, Matt Wright, Jeremy Pierson, and the rest of the team. But it wasn't enough to overcome Powell's 11 seniors...and He-Man Ryan Romans, who had 27 points and a bushel of rebounds.

Both teams head to the region at Letcher Central next week. The drawing is tomorrow.

Good luck to both.:thumb:

Congrats to Powell Co. With JBS losing tonight the draw tomorrow could get very interesting.

Packed....loud....and well behaved.

I hope everyone enjoyed the 56th district tournament this year. As a former AD who has been involved in several of these events when it's Owsley's turn to host it, I know what goes on behind the scenes to make things run smoothly.

Now it's back to Powell next year for their turn to host, and then Estill will have their first opportunity in 2009.:thumb:

A note to the Owsley county folks in charge, it was very well run. I was very impressed. The cafeteria and hospitality room was awesome and the service tremendous.

Thank you Einstein!!! All of the staff at Owsley helped this week. We couldn't have done it without them. Thanks to all the coaches and their staff and the administration from all the schools. You were great and very supportive if we needed anything. We always appreciate the opportunity to open our school for student events.

Powell County played thier game, getting the ball up the court as quick a possible. Powell's full court press was not effective with getting turnovers, but it made the Owsley players use alot of energy each time down the court. Ryan Romans had 27 points and was force inside for Powell County. Daniel Kinser was key for the Pirates, in the first half he made several key passes that led to Powell baskets and in the fourth quarter he hit three baseline jumpers in a row. Danny Dennis hit a big 3 from the top of the key to put Powell up by 13 points early in the fourth quarter. Jonathon Skidmore played very defensive game. Jeremy Banks had several key rebounds. Kyle Lively wins his second district championship in a row (Jackson City last year).

The Athletic Directors for Owsley County (Peggy Edwards and Jerry McIntosh) and thier staffs, along with the many volunteers made with week at the 56th District Tournament a pleasure. Everything was top notch. Thank you.

Good Luck to both teams in the regional tournament.

56th District All-Tournament Team

Lee County - Aaron Charles and Kenny Brandenburg

Estill County - Tristen Cackling and Blake Christopher

Owsley County - Trey Congleton, Jeremy Congleton and Adam McIntosh

Powell County - Ryan Romans, Daniel Kinser and Danny Dennis

Defensive Award - Trey Congleton from Owsley County

MVP - Daniel Kinser from Powell County

I think the tournament went very smoothly. Peggy Edwards and Jerry McIntosh did an excellent job. The fans were enthusiastic, yet were well behaved. I know there was some talk that Owsley's gym was too small, but the six night format adequately dealt with that problem. I think the 56th District seeding teams, and rotating the tournament on a yearly basis is the only way to stage the tournament, and it continues to work very well.

This was a very enjoyable game to watch for 3 quarters. Coach Parrett had an excellent gameplan and has done an awesome job with the talent level that he inherited.

Powell shot way too many 3s early and that's what gave Owsley the early lead and is why they hung in the game for so long. We all know 3 point shooting is not Powell's strong suit. They CANNOT come out in the regional tournament and do this or they will make an early exit.

Awesome event. Well executed and staffed. The Owsley administration, as always, were very prepared and provided a wonderful environment. The only thing better than the hospitality room was the people. Congrats to the Pirates and Owls. Thanks to all our friends in Booneville for a wonderful tourney.

I agree they did a great job with what they have got. Personally I kind of like the small atmosphere because it can get real loud. But I do think that that gym is getting awful small to have the district tournament.

It's not getting any smaller. It's the same size now as it was when it opened in 1976.

It's just not getting any bigger,:D and won't unless they knock some walls down and build on, which I don't see happening.

All in all though, I think the gym held the crowds fairly well. I know the night we played Lee County's boys, and the championship night as well, there were plenty of places to sit in the area from which I watched the games.
