"As I have said many times, I believe we have made many mistakes in the prosecution of the war. With a new commanding general and a new strategy, we are now trying to correct those mistakes, and I believe we have a realistic chance to succeed," he said.

 

His statement added: "That does not change the fact, however, that we have made many mistakes in the past, and we have paid a grievous price for those mistakes in the lives of the men and women who have died to protect our interests in Iraq and defend the rest of us from the even greater threat we would face if we are defeated there."

I agree with McCain's assessment of the war. I don't agree with people using the term wasted, but the word is a different connotation when someone uses it who wants us to leave and someone who still thinks we can win.

Poor word choice and nothing more. Of course i don't think anyones life was actually wasted but its a sad day when one american has to die. I myself think if anything has been wasted it is time, knowlege(of our military leaders), and materials.

I hated this quote more than any other. I did go to college and still volunteered to go to Iraq.

I voted for McCain in the 2000 Republican primary, but I think he is drifting away from a message and a platform that I can support. He seems to be trying mightily to straddle the fence on Iraq. He supported the war and continues to support it. He supports the surge, even though most independent observers believe it is too little, too late. And yet he is highly critical of the administration's management of the war and lets slip what are probably his true feelings: that we as a country have wasted the lives of thousands of our finest young people.

 

After his service in Vietnam and tremendous personal sacrifice, and then continuing to support such an obviously disastrous and tragic policy blunder, I don't know how McCain can sleep at night.

I believe we'll hear about McCain gaffs more and more. Historically, the MSM has treated McCain well because they wanted to use him as a Republican voice who didn't always agree with the adminsistration. The greater the chances that McCain will get the Republican nomination the more likely the MSM will take off the gloves and expose McCain's personality flaws which often manifest themselves in statements like these. This is just the beginning; it will get ugly;

I would call a solider, or soldiers who rape a 14 year old girl and murder her and her entire family thugs. If you care to use another term, that's fine. Meanwhile, don't you think someone running for the highest office in the land would be more sensitive to those who gave their lives for the war that he feels is so imporntant?

But the post that caused you all of the problems didn't limit your statement to just those criminals. Whether by intent or not you posted that because of what you considered lowered standards that the Army was populated by thugs. Maybe you chose a poor way of communicating what you actually meant because as I recall in that thread after you were called on it you began justifying what you said by clarifying yourself. McCain has done the same thing. End of story. Or does McCain not deserve the same consideration that you expected when you stuck your foot in your mouth?

Somehow, all three definitions seem to suit Iraq, our military and what its done to both.

A sacrifice, yes....it's true. But, a sacrifice that's also a waste.

That is a good point, but most people probably don't use the literal definition. As rockmom pointed out, a sacrifice can be wasted, but no one wants to hear that.
