SouthernSportsFan Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I've read many boards that said whenever Tubby was hired, they thought they would kill themselves. Maybe they did... but after he won the championship in '98, did you still think that? Did you think you had a one of the best coaches in the country and proud to have him? I would hardly doubt that your first thoughts were, "man, he won with Rick's players." Whenever he won the championship, what were your thoughts of Tubby?
Lucky Charms Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I thought "#7, four more to go and we will have UCLA!!!" Thoughts of Tubby, after he gave his speech in '98, I thought to myself, "what a great man."
Rickyp Posted February 28, 2007 Posted February 28, 2007 I was happy for him because I think and thought he was a class guy. I sure didn't think that 10 years later we would be 5th in the SEC east and losing 10 games every other year.
polarbear1994 Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 MY thoughts--- Nice job winning with Ricky P's team. And before anyone starts, Pitino would've won with them too.
futurecoach Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 The problems that has happened to Tubby is when he started losing some of his assistants, and he didn't replace those assitants that left to be head coaches with more good assistants. And that is the thing that has hurt him the most...

I know this is a touchy issue with many fans but I don't think Rick thought he could do what you allege he would do. He left and TOOK MERCER to the pros. He lost in 97 with Mercer so I doubt he would have won without him in 98 but who really knows? Rick never ceases to amaze me.
polarbear1994 Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Ha! it only took 5 minutes for me to get someone fired up! BWAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!!

He lost in 1997 to an Arizona team that although they were good, played about 6 miles above their heads during the tournament. Any UK fan knows that if you have Derek Anderson you run with it.

Son of Bear Posted March 1, 2007 Posted March 1, 2007 Even though the 98 team was Rick's recruits, they still played Tubby style. They were known as the "Comeback Cats" because they always got behind, but had the talent to come back. That is where the problem lies now, UK gets behind but doesn't have the talent to come back or finish off games.

I think Tubby's a good coach, but I definately think it's time for him to get a fresh start somewhere. Better for him and the program.
