NO-NO-NO-NO......NOT EVEN CLOSE! Though a classic case of looking ahead to "arch-enemy" NCC (lol). Tom Russell led Bluebirds of the '74-'75 era were 3-23, senior laden with a couple of (politely said) "questionable" position keeps, 3-4 players quit, team "rules" were broken, parents (2 in particular) created such a ruckus at games and with administrators that Coach Russell eventually caved and resigned. This, by the way, was PERFECT timing as St. Thomas was in the midst of closing and Ken Shields came down the street to begin the most successful run of hoops in HHS history...to date! A win is a win at this time of year. Dayton played inspired defending their home court and hosting the tourney. HHS escaped to play another day. Hopefully NCC will be just as cocky and we can stick an "L" on them! "GET 'EM FOCUSED, WILLIE!"

So why "10 times more"? Just maybe Dayton has turned the corner a bit. I believe they have 10+ wins this season, and I'm told 5 games lost by less than 2 points. Sounds like a gutty and scrappy greendevil team has competed well all season

...No offense meant. It looked obvious to me that HHS was "cocky"...thinking Dayton would be a "walk-over" game. I'm hoping, with the recent stellar play of NCC, that they would think the same of a "struggling" HHS team and the Birds could catch 'em flat, hang a loss on them, win the district and get a "winners seed" in the regional.

How can a 9-17 team overlook anybody? Especially the host team in the first round of the district tournament....This group at Dayton was scrappy in football and obviously scrappy on the hardwood as well! Maybe we should give them more credit rather than blaming Highlands for not winning by

20+......For Birds fans, bottom line is that you are advancing on to Saturday! 50% of the teams that played last night aren't....

I am sure the Greendevils represented their home floor well and the fans usually come out in full force down there. I was not surprised by the score to be honest. Highlands has the potential to go both ways. They have the ability to knock off very good teams like SK and if they come out flat and do not defend with high intensity they can find themselves in games like this.

 

I dont have the stats but I would say Dayton probably shot the ball fairly well on their home floor and in the end just couldnt defend Simpson who seemed to get to the charity stripe quite often.

 

If Highlands comes out and plays defense on the Greendevils like they did vs. SK the other night the score is 65-30. I wasnt there but I would say the intensity level probably wasnt as high. Taking nothing away from the home team and their efforts.

The GreenDevils played a very good game. They came out in a 2-3 zone and dared the birds to shoot outside. Defensively the Birds got looking for Sally (as Kenny Shields use to say) on the back door cuts. The Birds play such tight defense that this is going to happen sometimes and Dayton took advantage of this many times. Good Luck Birds !

Good post... Dayton deserves some credit, they took what the Birds D gave them, which was backdoor cuts. there were probably 5 to 7 easy layups just from the cross court backdoor pass... the Devils played inspired D, not letting Wise and Stein get many touches inside and pushing them outside of their comfort zone when they did... the only problem the Devils had is they just fouled a little too much... especially 3 pointers. And when a small school such as Dayton loses 2 starters to foul outs with 3 minutes plus to go in the game (and another hobbling around with a bum shoulder), they just ran out of players, steam and time... give Willie credit for pulling out the W but I know he was not too happy with them... congrats to Dayton on a great season...

Congrats to Willie and the birds on their win and perseverence. Dayton gave them all they could handle and they have had a fine season. Although only 10 wins, it's been 1997 since that has been accomplished in the Rivertown:thumb:

In the last 30 years Highlands has been either good, very good, or great, until lately. History lesson aside, this is a very low point in that 30 year span.
