What is the basis of Lent?

Featured Replies

Does Ash Wednesday have Scripture foundation?

Try Job 42: "...I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes."

or Matthew 10: "...if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes."

The ashes are an ancient symbol of penitence and a reminder of our mortality.

On fasting:

Matthew, Chapter 6:

16 "And when you fast, do not look dismal, like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by men. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward.

17 But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face,

18 that your fasting may not be seen by men but by your Father who is in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you."

My favorite part of Lent is Stations of the Cross.

It's a powerful Good Friday service. It was also the guide for Mel Gibson's adaptation in The Passion of the Christ.

I don't mean to offend, but are there rules to fasting... again, I think I would like to participate but want to know all the facts before doing so. Thanks for the responses.

I started to answer the thread question with, "dead skin cells and fabric fibers" but realized that is the basis of LINT. :sssh:

Fasting is one full, meatless meal. I fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

Abstaining is not having any meat on the fridays of Lent. Or not having meat on any friday. I only abstain during Lent. Things have changed since I was a kid.

A couple of years ago, we had a non-Catholic cook at school who was using cream of chicken soup in the tuna casserole on friday.

When we think of Fasting we ususally think of food. But it also can mean something else alltogether. Depriving oneself is meant during a time of grief. Jesus didn't emphasize (sp) this act enough and his critics used this against him. He said "Fasting is associated with sadness, he tells them "my disciples will Fast later after I leave them".

1 Corinthians 7:5

Do not deprive each other except by mutual consent and for a time, so that you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again so that Satan will not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.
