Tubby Smith call in show

Featured Replies

1. the 1st comment hit the nail on the head and I believe that we all know the reason for that w/o going into it.

2. OTS would never do that, he has far too much class and dignity.

One more thing, I didn't tune into much of then call in show but I did hear it when Cameron Mills called in, he made some very good points and was all class.

On #2. I know he wouldn't but I really wish he would. Because if he goes there goes the program into a rebuilding mode that would take at least 2 to 3 complete. And the numero uno salute would serve alot of people right. Not very classy, but extremely gratifying.

You have to take the "can't do's" with the "kudos" if you're the head honcho. Set up or planned, the show was a dodge.

I agree. Watching and following UK is no longer fun to do and it has about 5% to do with Tubby. The fans have created an atmosphere that is not fun. I wouldn't mind that they get their way and have another coach come in and struggle for another 2 years when they turn on him and then go through 3-4 years of this stuff they did to Tubby.

The way these fans act, it would be fitting that UK never wins another championship.

I agree that the way a lot of UK fans act is ridiculous. I like my sports teams as much as anyone and I root as hard as anyone. But when the game is over, I move on to another game and another day. It's just a game. For some fanatics, UK basketball is so interwined with their existence that a devastating loss is taken as hard as a death of a family member. When the Cats lose, the fanatic receives that loss in a much more personal way than does a fan who is passionate , but not fanatical. And don't think that this is kind of fanaticism is strictly limited to UK basketball fans. Ask some Cornhusker football fans about its fanatical base. The stories would be all too familiar. The same is true with other programs as well. They say that UK basketball is a religion to some. Unfortunately, this is sickenly true in some cases.

There is only one time that I can remember crying like a little baby when my team lost and that was when the Forty Freakin' Niners beat the Bengals in the Super Bowl(34 seconds from a championship). I was much younger then, but still old enough to know I shouldn't have cried. Rice and Montana are still two words I try to avoid to this day.

I hate when the Cats lose, but unlike some fanatics, there are still some things I can do with my life the day after a loss.

 You just had top bring that up didn't you!

One of the worst decisions ever....if tubby tries to claim this was planned before..I call hogwash...and if it was they should have scrapped that idea...because the repercussions of this backlash will leave scars.

Tom Leach went on a radio show tonight to basically say that it wasn't his idea and it wouldn't happen again if he was hosting.

I sometimes wonder where and who some of these people hear these silly rumors from! Some hate Tubby so much that they start rumors just to get people riled up!

There is a rumor going around that Tubby is staying next year.

Not the point. Don't have a "call-in show" if you are going to dodge callers. If you can take the accolades after a big win, then you should take the heat.

Tubby hasn't been able to "take the accolades after a big win" on his call in show in a loooooooooooong time.:irked:

To quote Clubber Lang "I pity the fool".

No offense Rambler, but how do YOU KNOW how much "class and dignity" Smith has?

He very well may well be Mr. Class, but what makes you say that? What you have seen on television?

Don't fight that fight. You will lose. I know you want him out, but that is the last direction you want to go in your case.

Tom Stultz, the man who heads Host Communications, issued an apology last week to UK fans, Coach Tubby Smith and the host of Smith's weekly radio show, Tom Leach.

Stultz apologized for Smith's radio call-in show taking only two calls from fans. After all, giving fans the chance to speak with the coach is the main purpose of the show (besides generating money for Smith, Host Communications and, indirectly, UK).

Much of the hour-long show was taken up talking to four former UK players who called in as invited guests. With UK Athletics Director Mitch Barnhart having issued a statement on the status of the basketball program earlier in the day, the unusual format appeared to be an attempt to help Smith dodge pointed questions from fans.

Not true, Stultz said. The Host Communications boss man said his company erred by not lining up the usual two guests well before airtime. So the scramble to find guests resulted in four former players agreeing to participate: Kenny Walker, Cameron Mills, Scott Padgett and Jeff Sheppard.

"We ended up in an over-booked situation that we were not aware of until 15 minutes before airtime," Stultz said in a statement. "Coach Smith and Tom Leach became aware of the schedule just a couple of minutes before the program went on the air. ... In retrospect, we should have limited the number of scheduled guest callers to one or two so we would have had more time for fans to ask questions of Coach Smith. In the future we will put such limitations on the number of guest calls."

I heard a rumor that Tubby was going to be the new defensive coordinator for the UK football program. Again that's just a rumor, but IMO, a very credible one. I wish Tubby the best of luck. For everything he's done for this country and the war on terrorism (at least one would think that from some of these posts), he deserves to be happy and successful.
