This is the second group that Coach Dodd has had for 4 years as a group.

 

The first group won the region and this group is the favorite.

 

Kasey Clark and J. Sizemore did not play this year and both were past starters for the Devils.

 

Two years ago when Josh Gross decided not to play his senior year and Russell lost in the regional finals to Rowan, Coach Dodd did an excellent job just getting the team to that point. Sloane played with a bad shoulder the whole season.

 

Next year will be a rebuilding year as the seniors from last year and this year have dominated the playing time.

Duck, are you kidding me? Dodd and coaching in the same sentence is an oxymoron!! The few games I have seen of him, he only yells at the kids and does not try to coach them through anything. Besides his influx of talent (not from Russell's primary schools) he has not done anything that would show his coaching abilities. Dodd is the furthurest thing from Coach of the year IMO. It is only an opinion but it's mine.

When you continuously stall the ball (to try to win) and numerous times lose that winning margin in the process, at what time is that excellent coaching. If Russell loses the region this season, I will believe it will be because of coaching, freethrows or a combination of both.

I may have missed it but who would the dawg vote for as COY?

I think Rex Cooksey has "coached" the best this season, and have been pursuaded to think that Johnson from Bath County is deserving.

 

This is my observation of the majority of coaches in the 16th. I think there are alot of coaches who could step in and coach many of the 16th region teams and have the same results or better. I think Ashland, Rose Hill, Russell, Elliott, and Rowan. Nothing against these schools, teams or coaches but I know each of these schools are successful and their coaches have each done a good job this year but I just dont think any of them should be coach of the year. If Biggs, Fraley, Mays or Daniels wins I can accept it, but I sure would shed a tear and be upset if Dodd wins it.

Biggs has done the most with the amount of talent he has. What are you talking about and who are you refering to: Mcdavid, started since he was an 8th grader "A Warrior" Thomas, started since he was a 9th grader "Great Athelete"

Wilcox, started since he was a sophmore "Work Horse" and the rest of the team is pretty good players.

 

Now, if Coach Biggs can play the same schedule next year with the same success. He should get coach of the year.

 

Coach Fraley, on the other hand starts an 8th grader, two freshmen, one sophmore and one junior. He has guided this very young team to an undefeated season at the Hill. They are closing in on a 20 win season, the last time that happened at the Hill, O.J. was running show.

I would have liked to see Rose Hill play a bit of a stronger schedule. That would have been a great measuring stick to see just how good they are right now. I guess we'll find out next week.

Rose Hill is a year away. Whatever they accomplish this year is extra gravy. After watching their 7th grade dispose of both Verity's 7th grade and Verity's 8th grade (3 times each this year) makes me believe that, when they arrive, they will likely "visit" a while. I didn't leave out part of my post. Rose Hill's 7th grade team is also its 8th grade team.

Scooter, did that same 7th grade (or 8th grade) team just win a tournament down state a few weeks ago? I received an email with a team pic beside the trophy/nets but I don't recall the name of the tourney.

Yes. The Rose Hill 7th grade team won what is considered to be the state championship in a tournament involving almost 40 schools from around the state. The tournament was held in Lexington. This team won its conference tournament today at Morehead by defeating Ashland (Verity) 53-31. The starters played only the first half and led at halftime 38-12. They finished their 7th grade season at 32-0.

 

The accomplishment doesn't guarantee a big high school run but it does create optimism what with 9th graders Euton and Jackson and 8th grader Malloy all three of whom already start for the varsity.

It is interesting that the same people who say that Euton and Jackson are not in the top 5 players in the region will also say the Fraley coaches a lot of talent. :confused:

 

So which is it? If Vanhoose, Daniels, Ferguson, McDavid, Thomas, Ethan Faulkner, Evan Faulkner, Barker, and Selby are better then Fraley is hands down the COY.

Like the style of play or not, Coach Dodd deserves COY. They have been the dominant team in the 16th all year long.

When a coach comes into a season with a team that is picked tops in the area, he has a lot of people seeking to chop him and his team down. Being the top pick is one matter. Meeting expectations is quite another. Russell was favored and Russell has, to date, delivered. Dodd deserves much of the credit.
