Well, it ain't rocket science to be a medical professional,,,,heck,,,,I'm one! And in my professional experience, the only thing I saw in my decade plus is two kids from Cabell Midland get the inside of their noses cauterized to cut down on nose bleeds. They diet to "cut weight". It's not like they're bulemic. But the kids I've seen wrestle are some of the most fit kids I know.

And with regards to the showdown with KOJ, neither of us can rassle anymore, and for that matter, neither of us have any hair to pull, so what's the point?

Hair pullin....eye pokin, hide a little salt in your shorts and throw it in my eyes....its all good. Maybe even the killer norwegian could make an appearance. I have seen first hand how the refs like to yell at him....for no reason whatsoever!!!!!!! My partner could be bobbyearl....he has come up with an exploding move...for both of us......we like to call it the flyin burrito

... Now if I change my profile to read, enjoy watching some other sports, will that make you happy???

goherd: I hope this doesn’t come as a shock to you – but my happiness does not come from anything that you may choose to do, or not do.

IMO, wrestling is a great sport! The wrestlers work very hard at conditioning. Almost anyone can afford to loose a few pounds of fat to “cut weight”. But, most people know that loosing too much weight will also cause a loss of strength (which would negate the “advantage” of wrestling in a lower weight class). That’s just common sense (you don't have to be a "medical Professional" to understand that). Therefore, reasonable people wouldn’t over do it.

The wrestlers that I’ve seen (with the exception of some heavy weights:D ) have all been fit and trim and would put most of us to shame.

I’m happy that Boyd Co. is starting a wrestling program. I look forward to seeing them on the mat. :thumb:

You would think that, but I have personally seen "reasonable" people do just this very thing.

Wouldn't take much to put me to shame...nobody wants to see me in a singlet...:creepy:

Good post.. I too am happy that Boyd is starting a wrestling team.

Maybe goherd just does not want to lose to Ashland in another sport.

Yes, I have been to several big meets...I'd rather watch paint dry.

Just curious as to what big meets you have attended? I am sure as an alumnus of Marshall you had the chance to watch the WV high school state tournament and the WSAZ tournament both of which are held in Huntington.

I don't know if you have ever been to the KY high school state tournament, but if you don't find that particular meet exciting then you don't have a pulse. People who have never watched a wrestling meet, that for some reason or another get conned into going, tell me that it is one of the most exciting events they have ever been to. Granted most local meets can be rather long and drawn out, so I can see instances where one might rather watch paint dry.

Many people argue that wrestling would supplement a school's football program. I feel that if a school fully supported their wrestling team like they do other sports then this would definitely be true. However, in most cases this isn't true. A weak wrestling team does nothing to help the football team. What most local teams lack though is a good head coach who actually wrestled. There are several teams who are coached by someone who never spent a second on the mat. Schools need to actively pursue a knowledgable wrestling coach. This, along with support from the school (and approval from the football coach), would translate into a competitive team, which would inturn improve the athletes that play football. Aside from the physical abilities that can be aquired from wrestling, the mental toughness gained from wrestling is unrivaled by any sport. Wrestling needs to be inbraced as a competitive sport, as well as a tool to be used by football coaches.

Priscilla Brownfield from Campbell County was the girl who made it to state last year. She went 3-2 in the 103 lb. weight division. She wrestles for the women's team at Univ. of the Cumberlands. She is tough, tenacious and really hung in there.

New weight loss standards have been implemented which makes it impossible to "cut weight" in a dangerous manner. Kids can only cut 1 1/2 % of their weight a week. It is monitered very closely. This is why so many boys were switching weight classes two weeks before regionals. It took alot of them the whole season to get to their wrestling weight.

As far as Russell being afraid the sport would "steal" from their basketball players, this is ridiculous. The weight classes range from 103 to 285. As far as I'm concerned, this just gives kids who would not be able to play basketball a winter sport to enjoy.

For an informative discussion about wrestling, you are right, BluegrassPreps is mostly basketball and football. That's why a website was set up years ago for kentucky high school wrestling fans. Other than checking on here occasionally, the discussions about wrestling can be continued on another website devoted ONLY to Kentucky high school wrestling. PM me and I'll be happy to give you the address or simply google it.

This is for goherd 96- who I think said "I hope Russell never starts a program"

I got it in e-mai from my assistant coach, who happens to also be an assistant football coach. One more thing wrestling does not compete with basketball for athletes, we are looking for those students who are doing nothing between fall and spring. It is possible for both sports to co-exist. The expense works itself out in the end. Most wrestling mats last up to 20 years if properly taken care of.

I agree our best OL/DL are usually wrestlers. Our wrestling coach and I work together to coordinate schedules and it is a great thing for our program.

HERE IS SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION CONCERNING THE ADVANTAGES OF FOOTBALL AND WRESTLING WORKING TOGETHER . JUST SOME THOUGHTS YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK AT.

Several successful partnerships between wrestling and football. Might dissolve some of the stereotypes that some of our football coaches have about wrestling.

"I love wrestlers, they are tough and they make great football players"

- Mike Stoops, National Championship Football Coach, University of Oklahoma.

"I draft {wrestlers when I can} because they are tough, I have never had a problem with a wrestler." Joe Gibbs - Hall of Fame Football Coach.

"I would have all my offensive linemen wrestle if I could." John Madden- Hall of Fame Coach.

"Wrestlers make coaching football easy, they have coordination, balance and as a coaching staff we know they're tough." - Tom Osbourne, College Hall of Fame Football Coach, University of Nebraska.

Wrestlers in the NFL

10 Hall of Famers

3 Heisman trophy winners

14 first round draft picks wrestled

23 RB'S / 20 LB'S / 2 QB'S / 66 LINEMEN / 6 DB'S / 1 K / 54 NP

Skills that football coaches liked that were enhanced by wrestling -many positions are absolutely transferable between both sports.

-Some skills include but not limited to footwork, handwork, eye coordination, mental toughness, explosive movements and balance.

-Learning the ability to beat the man in front of you can not be ignored.

32 pro football teams, 65 man roster, equals = 2,080 players

185 were wrestlers - 11.24%

5% of all the Hall of Famers have wrestling backgrounds.

Excellent post!!!! :thumb:

A side note. Guard Dan Neil beat Ricky Williams at the California state tournament back in high school. I think it was a simi final match.

At Pulaski, I have tried to start a wrestling club -meets during club time once a month. My problem is having a place to do anything and since I am not an official sport I have not financial backing - plus I am that familiar with the ins and outs of wrestling (I'm a football coach). But we (coaching staff) would love to get a team started. If anone has any information for me I would love to get this together.

I would get with one of the local teams. Usually local wrestling coaches will help other teams get started just to increase the popularity of the sport. It also gives them closer compitition.

So what's the story? Is Boyd County going to have a program this year?

So what's the story? Is Boyd County going to have a program this year?

It doesn't appear so, but I have no official word.

What debate? Boyd is gonna have a wrestling team. I applaud them for it! Too bad they didn't have one when guys like Ron Mullins or Kingofthejungle were in school. Back then it was rasslin' though. Not to mention that the thought of KOJ in one of those outfits gives me the willies!:creepy:

Now that is a thought....:creepy:
