I just don't see the expenditure of adding another sport that has limited potential for continuation at the next level as prudent use of funds. I know Russell's athletic department budget is stretched thin as it is without incurring anymore expenses. Providing practice facilities, coaches, mats and other equipment, scheduling, etc. It really adds up, plus basketball coaches who don't want to share their athletes already will surely not want to lose any kids to a same season sport. Whether it's technically coed or not, I certainly hope Russell never chooses to add this sport.

Your arguement for not adding it seems to come from you being a fan of basketball. Well thats your choice. Alot of wrestling programs in KY will actually let teams borrow things like mats to get programs started. Everything has limited continuation at the next level. Wrestling may not have a legit professional association (which there was one started but i do not know how it is doing) but there are still college programs, aau teams, world team, and the olymipics. How is that different than other sports. As far as basketball coaches fear of losing athletes to wrestling. Well they usually don't have to worry about it. Basketball players don't make for the best wrestlers usually. Football players do. The last time i checked there are alot more football players at Russell than Basketball players.

Cats eye: You are right on target. Football and wrestling are very compatible.

Football coaches are usually big supporters of their school’s wrestling program. For example, Coach Matney actually coaches both the football and wrestling teams at Johnson Central. Tony Love is Ashland’s defensive coordinator for football and Head Coach of the wrestling team (with Coach Hart’s full support).

I understand that Coach Lee Evans is behind the move to add wrestling at Boyd Co.

I'd love to see Russell start a wrestling team too. But, if not, it's their loss (and their students').

Most of the schools in the “Golden Triangle” of Northern and Central Kentucky have wrestling programs. It just seems to be in our local area that wrestling is missing.

I believe Coach Canter (Larue) helps with the football team.

Let me as you this... Have you ever been to a wrestling meet?

Anybody that has ever been to a wrestling meet knows how exciting they are. :dancingpa

As far as providing practice facilities, coaches, mats and other equipment and scheduling... it isnt that big of a problem for a beginning team.

Pike County Central uses cheerleading mats and they have a decent young team. I know alot of wrestling coachs would help out with their scheduling. If a school wants a wrestling team, there is no reason why they shouldnt have one.

Wow, that is pretty selfish to not want other kids in your school to have an opportunity other than basketball players. I think schools should offer as many sports as they can to give every kid a chance to belong to a team and maybe even earn a college scholarship. But that is just me, I cared for all the kids, not just the basketball players.

Every year I coached wrestling I had at least one female on my team.

Uhhh...did you see my avatar??? Not a big fan of roundball here... There are still college programs, but they are a dying breed so to speak. I'm not also not a fan of adding programs just for the sake of adding them or just to keep up with the Jones' if there is not a large percentage of students clamoring for the sport to be picked up. When schools do that, they are generally not successful and it usually takes away from the succes other sports. Just my personal observations. As you may be able to tell from the number of folks on this board, football and basketball are king in Kentucky and not too many folks give a hoot about wrestling. Count me in that group...:thumb:

Yes, I have been to several big meets...I'd rather watch paint dry.

Last time I checked, there were fewer than 80 KHSAA members schools participating in wrestling, that's about 33%. Must be more than just this area that's not into the sport.

I agree that football and wrestling are very comparable for linemen...as for skill positions, I'm not so sure there's as much correlation there.

Actually, I'd love for all student athletes to have an opportunity, unfortunately, male or female. However, I don't see an interest for a wrestling program at Russell, ergo, no need for one. If Boyd has the numbers interested to start one and the funds to do so, more power to them. When you say you want schools to offer as many sports as they can, keep in minf the funding for equipment and coaches is a definite hinderance in many cases, especially in smaller schools. Not too mention that if you spread your athletes too thin, there will not be much opportunity for success in many sports. Right now, I'd say RHS is pretty well maxed out.

Mr. Herd, I mean no offense by this, but I'd venture a guess that after this particular class graduates, that Russell would be more apt to field a highly competitive wrestling team than a highly competitive basketball team.

Actually, I just did the math, there are 78 wrestling schools in Kentucky out of 280 total KHSAA member schools which works out to 27.8%. That number does include all girls schools, but since wrestling is a coed sport, there is nothing stopping them from starting a team as well.

No disagreement from me on that...again, I could essentially care less about basketball, I mentioned that sport as a possible stumbling block to wrestling at some schools (since it seems to be king for most in this state) what kind of team Russell would have has no bearing on this debate.

What debate? Boyd is gonna have a wrestling team. I applaud them for it! Too bad they didn't have one when guys like Ron Mullins or Kingofthejungle were in school. Back then it was rasslin' though. Not to mention that the thought of KOJ in one of those outfits gives me the willies!:creepy:

Sad that people would step on a childs dream or opportunity, because they don't like the same things that others do. :madman:

If you have seen a wrestling meet and thought it was boring than you just did not understand what was going on. Its kind of like taking your girlfreind to a football game(except for my wife, she understands the game better than most men). But wrestling isn't as popular as football or basketball. That doesn't mean they should end the sport(or in this case not pick it up). If you look at it in a world veiw football isn't as popular as soccer. But for me that doesn't make it less appreciated. Your assumption that wrestling crosses over to lineman but not skill positions just shows your lack of knowledge on what wrestling improves. If you notice most of the weight classes go along with the sizes of skill players more than lineman. It increases eyehand coordination, foot speed, agility, flexibility, core strength, grip strength and so much more. That translates into any position. There are alot of kids in the school that don't play basketball, give them something to do.
