Boyd Co. to start wrestling next yr.

Featured Replies

Is there anything to report on a team at Boyd Co. I would love to see the sport pick up in the 15th as well. I do understand that it puts some title 9 pressure on AD's, but it is a great sport. Yea, I know girls are welcome but they are rare.

Boyd County doesn't have a wrestling team this year.

As for the 15th region.... Johnson Central, Sheldon Clark, Prestonsburg and Lawrence County have wrestling teams.

That leaves Paintsville, Magoffin County, Betsy Layne, Allen Central, South Floyd, Pikeville, Belfry, East Ridge, Shelby Valley and Pike Central without a wrestling team. 8 of the those 10 schools are A or AA.

I think the biggest point is this:

Wrestling offers an opportunity to a different type of athlete. Not everyone is a team sport kid. Maybe they're too small for football (how many 103lbs kids are a success in varisty football???), basketball has a limit of how many kids can be on a team, and maybe they are a physical kid that doesn't think a little contact should be a foul...

Our middle school program has some athletes from other sports, especially football...however, it provides a niche for the misfits of other sports and simply allows more opportunity for kids.

And yes, it should be considered coed. While the interest is not quite as strong as boys show in wrestling, girls wrestling is growing in popularity. Consider that Cumberlands has a collegiate team that had a girl battling for an olympic spot. Girls wrestling will grow and I would be willing to bet that in 15-20 years, it will be as accepted as girls basketball, field hockey, volleyball, even college club rugby.

There was no debate about Boyd's starting a program, the debate was more on the likelihood of other are schools (specifically Russell and GC) adding it as well as whether it should be picked up by more schools. As a medical professional, my biggest concern would be the number of kids I have seen with eating disorders due to the sometimes obsessvive nature of those trying to cut weight.

There are strict weight loss guidelines these days. Wrestlers are not permitted to lose more weight than their body can stand. In fact, wrestlers are evaluated at he beginning of the season and weight loss is monitored each week. Most weight lost is usually due to the intense workouts, not from starvation.

And yes, it does help a football program. I have seen and experienced first hand results.

It's a wonderful sport with plenty of college scholarships available for good wrestlers.:thumb:
