From the clip I saw - should have been an ejection.

Intent to injure - totally uncalled for.

I liked after the play where he threw his hands up when the kid came after him like what did I do. Also, it was not even called an unsportsmanlike penalty it was just called a personal foul.

  • Thanks, I missed your response. Additionally, my thinking is it should be the three game suspension option. In my opinion, Driver is out of control.

USC are "non-contact" fouls by definition and rule.

There is such a disparity in size between Driver and the DB. Perhaps that contributed somewhat to the visually perceived violence? If Driver was 5'10', 180 lbs. he probably could not/would not be able to make the tackle in such a fashion. So maybe we need referees that can read bigger players minds as to intent. 🤔

Well that may be true......but........................its the action

If both players were the same size, and one did what was done here - would that make it less serious ?

Please refer me to that guy who can read players minds ........😁

Going back to rule: keep in mind this is ChatGPT's summary so it's not the exact wording of the KHSAA rule.

If Player A picked up Player B, lifted him off the ground, and deliberately threw/body-slammed him onto the turf, the important question for the officials would be whether the act was:

merely incidental contact during a football play,

or deliberate, excessively violent contact that created an obvious risk of serious injury.

It was definitely not incidental contact. In the second case there is no mention of intent to injure, only that it was deliberate. I think it's clear that it was deliberate. That should make it easier to call than adding the additional task of determining if it was intentional.

Is this a method of tackling that coaches teach in practice? If not, then it's not a "routine football play' as a lot of people are saying. Why teach players to tackle in a way that could get them penalized and possibly ejected?

If the players were the same size it wouldn't have happened. Kind of tough to pick up and body slam a guy who is 6'6' 250 like that. It's a lot easier to slam the little guy.

Agree, Guru. He needs to sit. Hopefully the kid can get straightened out. He is an incredible talent. I would hate to see it wasted by his inability to control himself. There is a fine line between playing aggressively and playing stupidly. It seems he has crossed that line.
