Uniform Colors & KHSAA Enforcement

Featured Replies

Saturday morning rant. Why won't the KHSAA enforce the rules on contrasting numbers on uniforms?

The rule that number color is to be in contrast to the jersey. They even provide color charts that state the jersey must have 1 color from each side of the chart.

I realize I am old and may not see like I used to but, I don't think I'm alone.

If this is what is bothering you on a beautiful Saturday, with high school and college football underway, and the NFL around the corner, life is good for you brother.

It doesn't "bother" me but the larger issue here is rule enforcement, just like with kneepads and mouthpieces.

While it's got to be maddening for broadcasters and stats guys (or gals), it's really only an issue if it is difficult on the field for the officials to ascertain what number a player is.

Exact same issue can arise on a muddy Friday night.

Rules are rules though and hopefully teams have their uniforms approved prior to rolling them out.

I get it. Its picky. But as an announcer who takes his role seriously I want to get the numbers and names correct. I think the players deserve it.

I've spent a LOT of time in the pressbox as a spotter, and those white and gold jerseys are a nightmare. Honestly, they were the visiting team and I was announcing for the home team, I wouldn't bother even trying to announce anything for their team.

And just aesthetically speaking, I think the jerseys look dumb, too.

We got these at Mercer in 2019. Went with scarlet numbers on royal blue for the aesthetics. Thought it was a very old school/classic jersey.

Added bonus... tough for our opponents to see our numbers on video.

Our press box people got upset with me over these jerseys. When I left, they got rid of them & went with white numbers.

Surely a Coach would not try to "deceive" an opponent.

And PA announcers and broadcasters would be VERY GRATEFUL if everyone would follow the rules.... 😝

I agree. As a radio announcer it is hard for me to pick out gold numbers on a white jersey. We played a team last week who's colors were black and gold. They should have had black numbers on their white jerseys instead of pale gold.
