Appreciate you posting this info. No one saying a word. Apparently lopsided post season blowouts are ok in every sport except football.

How many of the losing teams listed above qualified for the regional? I know Cov. Holy Cross did. How many others?

Besides the 15th, which I believe uses a hybrid model, all regional basketball tournaments are made up of four district winners and four district runner ups.

Yes sir. So you lose in the postseason but you get to keep playing. Meanwhile, many football followers want more teams excluded from even getting a postseason game. Here is what many say.

Basketball - Everybody gets a postseason game and you can even lose a postseason game but still play more postseason games. You can lose in the postseason and be state champ.

Football - Many say keep more teams out of the postseason. Make it harder to get into the postseason. Many want as many as half the football teams to not even play one postseason game.

That's my point. Stop whining about too many teams in football postseason while you are ok with all teams playing in postseason in other sports and then staying in the postseason after losing a postseason game.

Or, like many have said here dozens of times, football is wildly more popular and that's why there's more discussion on it. I'm not sure why that's so hard to grasp.

I won't speak for others, but my opinion is no different for basketball. The post-season should be a privilege.

In basketball, Madison Central beating Model by 51 points in a warm, dry climate controlled gym where each team likely dressed the same number of players and none of the Model players were physically battered and completely overwhelmed at every position on the court is a bit different from football where Frederick Douglass or Boyle County or CAL or Trinity beat a 1st round playoff opponent by 51 points by physically hammering and often injuring the opposing players (not intentionally) when the weather could be cold rain and 38 degrees.

I see those two scenarios very differently.

And by the way, FD or Boyle County or CAL or Trinity might dress 50 more players for that 1st round game than their opponent dresses.

I will give you one example of why this is from a couple teams I know about.

Simon Kenton 9-12 enrollment is 1,866

Williamstown 9-12 enrollment is 181

It is just a numbers thing, both teams understand that.

Simon could have won by 80 or more if they wanted, but they have always been gracious in how they do it. Can't say that about everyone.

Would a classification system help? I don't know, but I do know that the All "A" Regional and State tournaments are a blast to watch.

I’m also curious how many basketball districts there are where it would require one way travel of greater than 2 hours for a district semifinal game, as we can see happen more than once with football first round games. I wonder how many even require an hour or more.

Basketball and Football are just different animals. Some refuse to see or acknowledge that as the quoted post points out there are physical reasons why football is treated differently in this debate, climate reasons why it is treated differently, and as I’m suggesting, travel reasons.

One of the other points in VoR’s post is the ability to lose a game in the district final and still advance. I’d happily eliminate that if it meant we could remove that strawman from the board. I could conjure up reasons why it doesn’t bother me, but I don’t think there are many THAT dedicated to it.

I also think if the criteria was changed that teams that won 4 or fewer games during a basketball season would not participate in the postseason, you’d probably see relatively little pushback.

There were words said in the Holmes/CCH district thread. Those big mean Colonels really took it to those helpless Bulldogs.

Exactly right. Post-season is a privilege.
