Ladies and Gentlemen, boys and girls, moms and dads mamas and papas… It is time for everyone’s second-favorite week of the year. District Tournaments! Get your popcorn ready, get there early, and get ready for some bloooooooooooowouts!!

 

This week should be fairly chalk. A few interesting games on the docket, but Michael Buffer will be announcing none of them. I predict it’s a pretty clear picture heading into Maysville next week for every district but 1, and in that one? It’s mainly just who backs their way into a first-round regional blowout best.

 

Here’s the last week of the regular season’s rankings. 

 

 

1.) George Rogers Clark ?||  (25-3)   The Cards achieved the rare feat of having a loss reversed from earlier in the year, so now they’re on even better footing. A few blowouts last week have them rested for Paris, who won’t put up much of a fight before the best game in the state Thursday Night. MoCo comes calling. 

 

2.) Montgomery County ?|| (15-12) The Indians took the opposite approach of the Cards. Scheduling 2 top teams in their last week (taking an L in both) to get prepared for the district tourney. Bourbon will not lie down, but MoCo is already thinking Red and Black. 

 

3.) Campbell County ?|| (19-9)  Sowder’s bunch had a light week, Handling St Henry and spent the rest of the week 'putting the hay in the barn.’ They take on Calvary in what should be an expected outcome, and then await the challenger from Brossart/Scott. I expect they’ll yet again be cutting Nylon at the end of the week. 

 

4.)Bourbon County   ?|| (19-11)  There are some things for Bourbon to build on, but when two Goliaths live in your district, it’s tough being David. They could shock the world, but I don’t expect it. Finished well, beating Morgan Co and Scott. Definitely something to build on.

 

 

5.) Bishop Brossart ? || (15-12) A loss to NewCath doesn’t leave confidence very high in Alexandria. But they knocked off the Camels once, and they believe they can do it again. I don’t think they make it past Scott, who is looking for revenge and respect 

 

6.) Nicholas County ? || (19-11) They should pretty handily win their district. But I know the PC Wildcats are ready for them. I had higher hopes for this team, but they could win a few in Maysville and surprise some folks. The Raceland loss adds to a list of baffling games from the Bluejackets this year. 

 

7.)  Scott ? || (14-13)  Benjamin Brown was sure an injection into this team at the right time. If Aaron Hampton hadn’t been hurt I know the record would lean far more in the left column than it does. But, Steve Fromeyer and crew are always ready to make a run in the postseason. I think they’ll beat Brossart and give Campbell all they want in the finals.

 

8.) Pendleton County ?|| (15-12) The Cats have been in the mix all year. Fleming was light work, but then Grant caught them napping. One thing is for sure, when they see Nicholas for the district championship they will not be napping. I think the Bluejackets will win but the Wildcats will make them work for it.

 

 

9.) Calvary Christian  ?|| (19-10)  I fear that Calvary has peaked this year. I think win #20 will elude them. But, a good season to build on in Taylor Mill. Nothing to hang their heads about.  

 

10.) Bracken County ?‍❄️ || (13-14)  Coach King’s two-game suspension might have been more painful than they originally thought. Losing to Bellevue and Nicholas County isn’t a good way to walk into the field house for a hotly contested 39^th district tournament. I would say the immature and inexperienced Polar Bears will see their season end Tuesday Night.

 

11.)  Mason County ? || (5-19) No one wants this season to end any faster than the people in Maysville. And I think the Panthers of Augusta are going to oblige Tuesday Night. The worst season in Mason County’s incredibly storied history will come to a close. 

 

12.) Augusta ? (?1) || (7-14) Jason Hinson knows how to get the job done. In the postseason, against Mason County. Taking this many losses at the end of the season has me wondering. But confidence is always high at the end of February when the Panthers take the floor.  

 

13.) St Pat ?||  (?1) (7-16) Bracken County and St Pat are both scuffling. But I think St Pat has their number this time. Lex Turner has too much experience and cool to let the Polar Bears rattle the Saints.

 

 

14.) Harrison County ? (?2) | (7-20)  Clawing their way out of the basement, they dominated Mason County and beat Holmes. Pendleton County cannot look past them, but the ‘Breds better bring an A+ game if they don’t want to go home. 

 

 

15.)  Paris ? || (3-20) Coach Strait learned a few things this year. The team has grown, and better things are coming from Paris. 

 

 

16.)  Robertson County  ?|| (5-23) 5 Wins means the season wasn’t a total disaster. But, it was not the best of times in Mt. Olivet this year. Nicholas Co. sends them packing Tuesday night.

Nicholas County hadn't won the All A in a very long time. With that happening and them being the #1 seed in the 38th District, I can see how Morris got the nod.

GRC with a good draw even as the runner-up. Montgomery will have a big game with Campbell the late game then turn around if they win and play GRC in finals.

GRC couldn’t have asked for better draw.

 

Campbell and MoCo will be a war in round 2.

 

Gonna be a fun week in Maysville. 

That 20-21 hour turnaround with 2 long bus rides for the winner of Campbell-MoCo to play GRC is rough.

It's March, and all eyes in the 10th descend on the legendary Mason County Fieldhouse. The Popcorn is fresh, the fans are ecstatic and everyone is ready for one of the best weeks of the year up on the hill. Let's recap the district tournaments that got us here, and make a few prognostications about the week. The truth is, barring a miracle, there are 3 teams that have a shot at escaping the Fieldhouse with nylon in their hands, but, that's why they play the games.

 

37th District:

A little bit of regular-season chaos made the seedings interesting, with Brossart as 1, and Scott as 4, but everyone knew to expect the unexpected in this rematch, and they were right. The Eagles stole, literally, the victory right out from under the Mustangs in the final seconds to secure their spot in the championship. The Camels easily handled Calvary, and then went on to easily handle Scott in the Championship.

 

38th District:

The stunner here came in the championship. Pendleton and Nicholas both felt pretty confident there would be a 3rd rematch, and it was one for the ages. They'll be talking about that shot at Pendleton Memorial a long time from now, and they'll remember this championship. The Bluejackets overall played well, but I think most pundits would say they underperformed this season. They have a chance to prove everyone wrong at the region this week,

39th District:

The district that was thought to perhaps have the most parity in it's tournament this year... and somehow for the 22nd time in 25 years, still crowned the Royals as champions. Mason County dispatched Augusta easily in the opening round, as the Panthers really struggled late into the year, and then Bracken County took care of the Saints and Lex Turner COTY talk died down, the entire city of Brooksville descended on Maysville, assuming this was the year. BC hadn't cut a net since 1997, and the entire county was ready. Up 7 with :38 to go the buzz was building, and somehow, Brian Kirk pulled magic out of his hat, again. After being forced into overtime, the Polar Bears melted and lost to the Royals, again.

40th District. 

Montgomery County has had it's fair share of ups and downs this season. But they somehow, someway, found a way to take down GRC when it mattered most. We all know in October there would be 3, and likely 4 matchups between these two, and this is about how we expected them to go. MoCo won this one, the next one is the game that matters most though.

 

Region Tournament Preview:

The only game in question in the first round, in my humble opinion, is the first first round game between Mason County and Scott. I think Ben Brown and his 23.4 points per game will prove to be too much for the Royals, led by Ben Brookbanks 17 a game. The Royals are young and scrappy, but the road ends here for them. The other 3 games will most likely be running clocks. (Do too many teams make the playoffs in basketball?) But the next round will bring more excitement. GRC will easily handle their opponent, but Montgomery and Campbell will be a blood bath. Austin Davie had 20 last time in a losing effort, but the Indians were not yet at full strength, and Sears could be the difference maker to extend the margin even more. Campbell is playing well, and loves the region tourney, but it may not be enough to prevent armageddon part 4. The finals, if it does show to be a 4th match of the 40th, will be one for the ages. margins of 1, 6 and 7 in the first three matchups show us that there will be fireworks in the final. I fear MoCo might have fired their shot early, though, and GRC will be the ones climbing the ladder on Wednesday night.
