Open Job: Valley

For those of us who may not be so familiar with Louisville, is Valley the name of a neighborhood? Or is it the last name of someone the school was named after? I feel like I don't see the name come up too often in the news but I've always wondered. Same with Doss, as a matter of fact.

Valley Station is the neighborhood Valley is located in. Back in the day it was a "County" school and the biggest in the state in the early '60's IIRC.

I remember when Doss was built in the late 60's to relieve overcrowding in the west side schools, like Valley. As to the name ... ?

Really puts what Coach White is doing and Atherton in the proper light as coaching at a JCPS school not names Male and Manual is very tough.

Atherton is one of top academic schools in JCPS which helps.

Open by choice? Didn’t DeMarcus Smith leave Western to go to Evangel with Brandon Bender a few years ago, only to see the whole thing blow up? Valley also had to forfeit some games last year for using an ineligible player. He’s had success but seems like there’s always baggage.

Harry Doss High School is the actual name.  It was named after a Jefferson County school board chairman from the 60s.

Good question. Coach Smith is a VERY polarizing person in high school coaching circles. He was the guy last year who had his team taking deep shots for the endzone when they were up 66-8 late in one of their games....and then they had to forfeit that win along with four others because they were playing ineligible players. They failed to make the playoffs as a result of the forfeits.

And yes, DeMarcus Smith was the coach who was in on the whole Evangel football bugaboo. Evangel athletic director Brandon Bender announced in November 2020 that he had hired Smith to start the Evangel football program - prior to the conclusion of Smith's first and only season as head coach at Western High School. Then 2 months later Evangel backtracked and announced that they were accepting applications for their first head football coach, only to announce a couple of months later that Smith was, in fact, their head football coach. In July 2021 Evangel announced a very odd 12-game schedule for their inaugural 2021 football season, which included two pairs of games that would be played within a day of one another. Then after running into eligibility issues with numerous students who were trying to transfer to Evangel from Western, Butler and Manual high schools, Evangel notified the teams on their schedule that they were no longer fielding a football team for the 2021 season. A major KHSAA investigation followed, sanctions were threatened by the KHSAA, Brandon Bender's employment at Evangel was terminated, and oddly enough a letter was sent to the KHSAA by Evangel's superintendent stating that...direct quote here..."Mr. Smith is not an employee of Evangel. If he were, he would be terminated."

All that to say....based on DeMarcus Smith's track record, two years at Valley exceeded my expectations for his stay.
