This was the expected matchup, but each team took a bit more uneasy step to this round than suspect. North Oldham was in a back and forth affair with Spencer County until Spencer County made the quite questionable decision to go for a fake punt inside their own 20 midway through the final quarter, turning it over on downs. North Oldham punched in the score and a two point conversion, securing a 35-26 victory and a trip to the region finals for the first time since 2014. The region final round is much more old hat for Franklin County, who are into the region finals for the sixth straight season. The heavily favored Flyers were on the ropes at the half though, trailing Valley 20-14. 12 seconds into the second half and one kickoff return for a score later, and Franklin County was off and running, and never looked back en route to a 48-20 win. Franklin County, now the second highest RPI left in the class with Johnson Central losing, thereby maintained their perfect record (the last of those in the class as well) and earned the right to host North Oldham, a former district opponent not that long ago.

These two teams have not met this season, but the playoff meeting keeps alive a streak of 11 straight seasons the teams have met. It has been an unhappy series for North Oldham - they've never beaten the Flyers and have rarely been close. Franklin County is a perfect 12-0 all-time in the series, including two playoff meetings. Their first meeting way back in 2015 was the closest, a 23-7 decision. That's the only game Franklin County has scored less than 38 in the series, and North Oldham has never scored more than 35 (in 2016).

Franklin County has the series history, the record, the rank (they are #5 compared to North Oldham at #9), homefield advantage, and the playoff experience all backing them. Will they resemble more the team that came out in the second half against Valley, or could it perhaps have been a harbinger, an opening for North Oldham to pull the upset and return to the state semifinals for the first time in 11 years?
