I attended the SC-HHS game and, for the sake of a "complete" record, want to add the following observations:

 

1. The game was scheduled to start at 7:30 pm but HHS did not arrive at Memorial Coliseum until 7:23 pm. They received a full 30 minutes to warm up prior to the start of the game.

 

2. The PA man started to announce the HHS starting lineup but, alas, HHS was still in its dressing room. The team appeared about a minute and a half later. The PA man recovered and started over.

 

3. HHS had better looking uniforms.

 

4. I counted 32 cheerleaders for Scott County. Of course, with that many, I may have missed a half dozen or so. Not even Greenup County has that many cheerleaders and everyone around here knows that nothing, including educating students, remotely approaches cheerleading on Greenup County's list of priorities. HHS only had 16 or so cheerleaders but they had nicer uniforms.

 

5. HHS seemed to go through the motions of the game without showing too much interest until it was too late.

 

6. HHS's coach rivals the coach at NCHHS for noninvolvement in the game. OJ has had two real duds at his last two high school domiciles. The HHS coach should have been forced to buy a ticket like all the other spectators and, at times, he appeared to be bored, asleep, or some combination of the two. Of course, he had nothing to add anyway. Billy Hicks, on the other hand, worked hard for the win- physically and mentally.

 

7. Patterson may have needed more "touches" but he, quite possibly, should have worked a little bit to get loose and to earn some "touches". Of course, he may be saving all that "talent" for college.

 

8. Bud Mackey for SC was impressive.

 

 

9. I would suggest that you bet on HHS to win the return engagement in Huntington. With or without Mayo, HHS will be motivated and they will win. They certainly didn't appear to be motivated last Friday and it cost them any chance they had at a national championship rating.

 

10. Patterson may well be a fine prospect but he doesn't have the celebrity power of Mayo. The drawing card is clearly Mayo and not Patterson- even in Lexington. If you listened to the crowd, that was obvious. I understand that this fact is not pleasing to Mrs. Patterson.

 

11. The game was well worth the trip. If you can attend the repeat performance at Huntington, do so. However, don't expect SC to win again.

Scotterbob - we are so glad to hear from you on this topic. It's been such a long wait. A few comments to your comments:

1. The game was scheduled to tip at 8pm according to the Scott Co. athletics web page.

4. The JV and Frosh cheerleaders wanted to go to the game but didn't want to pay the $5 so they all decided to cheer. Rah Rah Ray - go cards I would also be willing to bet that Scott Co. also has the largest coaching staff in the state.

6. I agree - Coach Hicks had a great game plan and his pride in Kentucky basketball showed with his enthusiasm.

Put me down as one who believes Huntington High has a good shot of getting struck by Lightning twice! Hunt High is just not very deep and Scott County will still play harder than they do and will take it right at them. I'm sure the Referees will be favorable towards the Wva team, but Scott County has what it takes to GiT R DONE,:thumb: If Scott County survives the initial adrenalin rush HHIGH will have , then you got a ballgame, a ballgame in which Scott County is very capable of winning.

SC got after them full court, and OJ was guarded by Bud Mackey and Jimmie Warren.

One question I have had all along is, why did HHS show up so late. I know that they were there about 30 min. before the game, but most schools for a single game with no JV/Girls game would arrive at least an hour early.

SC started off with Mackey on OJ and Jimmy Warren guarding #11 the PG. After a couple of turnovers and a 5 second call they moved OJ to the point. When they did that Scott Co. started trapping him in the full court. He didn't like it.

I think that they were suprised that Scott got up in them and it took until 3minutes to go in the game before they adjusted to the pressure.

I don't know if Scott Co. has a zone in their bag of tricks - lots of traps and tough pressure man, but you don't see to much zone from the cards.

I watched this game on T.V. and have a couple of observations.

It was a great win for Scott Co. They played hard, clearly had the superior coach, and HHS seemed lethargic and unenergized. Maybe the incidents (and aftermath) of the game with Capital had a detrimental effect on their play ? This game (HHS vs. Scott Co.) was very well refereed and they were consistent and fair.

 

Also, as I watched the HHS coach, he did seem totally bored, uninterested, and never tried to call any time outs or make any changes. I have noticed in several games this year O.J. seems to get a late start. He will play just average in the first half and then pick it up in the second half. Also, O.J. seems to be struggling (for him) with his three point shot against tougher opponents. I think he and the rest of the team are going to have to come out with intensity and ready to play 100% from the opening tip-off in the next game.

 

In conclusion, I would bet on HHS in the next one if O.J. plays. However, I would agree with "Shooter X 3" that Scott Co. has more depth, and is capable of doing it again. Does anyone know if O.J. will play for certain in the next one? If not, who decides, and when? And yes, it is O.J. who draws the huge crowds. They want to see him. He is a team player and very unselfish on the court, but the fans come to see him and it is O.J. who draws them in. His all around game and various skills are always impressive, even on his "off" nights.
