6A South Warren (4-0) at 4A Hopkinsville (3-1)

This will be the 4th meeting between these 2 teams with the Spartans leading the series 3-0.

They first met in the second round of the 2016 4A playoffs at Hopkinsville where QB Ryder Litton (was also QB of South’s first State Championship team the year before in 2015) would lead the Spartans along with Kayron Namvong (175 yards rushing and 2 TDs) and former Michigan State 3-year letter winner CJ Hayes (a receiving TD and a critical 21-yard pick 6) to a 28-24 win.  The Spartans then moved to 5A in 2017 where they defeated Hoptown 35-14 and again in 2018 49-17.

Hopkinsville Tigers Information – (TP94 Ranking:  54.91)

Off the field, I really feel for the Tigers, their players, coaches and fans.  This is a proud football program with 2A Championships in 65 and 66 and several runner ups as well.   They have battled my Purples 67 times through the years (began playing nearly 100 years ago in 1927) in some downright dogfights and GREAT games!  Heck, current Purples Head Coach Mark Spader played on good Hopkinsville teams.

They just seem stuck in this quagmire of “consolidation effort” that since it’s dragged on this long the fewer and fewer are for it.  I don’t make the decisions, but surely either consolidate or don’t and get on with it.  The kids deserve that.

On the field, Coach Dustin Lopez and his Tigers have done really well to open the season defeating out of state schools Stratford (TN) and Prosser (out of Chicago) to represent the State well – Way to go!  They also fell to a better than you think Madisonville team on the road in Week 2.  And last night went to Cadiz and overwhelmed 2A Trigg County 55-28.

Two QBs have gotten time this season with SO Jasiah McCarley being the more successful with 652 yards passing with 8 TDs vs only 1 INT through 4 games.  Hoptown is led in rushing by SR RB James Bradley with 61 carries for 469 yards and 7 TDs on the season.  The top WR is SR Aiden Jesse with 11 catches for 260 yards and 4 TDs. Defensively, SR Foster Jackson leads the way with 40 tackles, 6 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks on the year.  Nice Work Mr. Jackson!

South Warren Spartan Information – (TP94 Ranking: 75.91)

South comes into this game riding high off a dominating defeat of rival Bowling Green 45-14.  It was the most points South has ever scored against Bowling Green.  They led 17-7 at the half and scored 4 TDs vs 1 for BG in the final half.  Just a convincing win for the undefeated Spartans who now have a realistic shot to compete to the end of the 6A playoffs.

The Spartans are led by JR QB Camden Page who played really well last night.  Page through 3 games is 51 for 73 with 744 passing yards 7 TDs vs 4 INTs, BUT he didn’t throw any INTs last night vs Bowling Green and that was important for South.

They have solid skill guys in SR RB Kayden York, who is much better than the state knows, with 183 yards rushing and 5 TDs and SR WR Jake Carter with 23 catches for 368 yards and 3 TDs.

But defensively is where the Spartans usually hang their hat.  “BIG” Jaquise Smith and Malik Butler anchor that DLine and it is surely a tough road trying to gain yards up the middle vs Sparty.  They have good LBs as well who do a nice job disrupting what your offense wants to do.

Game Preview

This has the “we need a game; hey they might be available let’s call and see; yeah, they are available; ok, let’s play” 15 seconds mentality written all over it.  Scheduling is a tough hombre; you are danged if you do and danged if you don’t in a lot of respects.  But placing Hopkinsville as a 6A team just stands out like a sore thumb, as they have never ever been in the top classification before.  But because of the so-called “consolidation efforts” they are mandated to play on the largest stage against a team that is legitimately fighting in the overall 6A playoff picture.  Just seems completely out of place for me.  But the way South schedules has never been in line with me, so why should that change now.  Onward.

Let me be brief for a change, even though South will likely rebound from top level focus they showed to defeat rival Bowling Green, South Warren would need to play their poorest game of the year for this one to be close and I don’t expect that to happen.  I get no enjoyment typing this against a Hopkinsville program I respect for all those old battles.  Just an unfortunate situation.

South Big!

Great preview and write-up. You are spot on in everything. Hopkinsville has roughly 970 kids in its enrollment this year according to KHSAA but yet for some unknown reason is playing in 6A for this final season.

South is the overwhelming favorite and rightfully so. They are scary good. Hopkinsville has to hit some big plays and play the game of their lives to keep it close.

Just don’t see South having a letdown here to allow a close game to even happen.

South names the score in this one.

And as the announcers just said this has been a very strange and weird game

21-15 SW, halftime.

Can you expand on that for us?

Hoptown has given SW everything they want for a half.

21-15 at the half south leads

Delays for lightening

dropped passes  hoptown scores then south returns kickoff

just really a wired feel to the game and a short halftime break due to time and weather delays
