Beechwood makes the short trip to take on NewCath in Park Hills.
NewCath is licking their wounds after getting smacked in the mouth by a solid Lloyd football team. It’s not getting any easier for NewCath this week with the Tigers on deck. The Breds better get some answers to the questions that Lloyd exposed. Who ya got?

Beechwood with a running clock win.

Excited to see the new look Tiger offense. I am thinking it will be a running clock in the Tigers favor but it’s early and you never know.

This game has taken some turns on the program level over the past 15 years. During the 1990's through 2006, Beechwood and NCC were in the same 1A district. That added heightened importance to the games between the two. Then in the 2007 redistricting, NCC moved up to 2A. In 2019, Beechwood and NCC traded classes with NCC dropping to 1A and Beechwood moving up to 2A. That super heated rivalry from when these schools were in the same district carried on through class changes as both teams kept this game on the schedule as their final regular season game before the playoffs. Since 2004, this game has featured 11 state championship teams - 8 Beechwood state title teams and 4 Newport Central Catholic state title teams. These two have not met since 2021. In 2021 Beechwood posted a lopsided win and the game has not been played since then. It is nice to see the rivalry renewed.

Looking to this week's game, it will be opening night for Beechwood. For the first time in 3 years the Tigers will be led on offense by a QB different than Clay Hayden. The new QB is Junior Emmett Queen. It will be his first start as a varsity QB but he comes into the role highly touted and is receiving D1 interest. Queen certainly has the size that attracts interest at that level standing 6'4". Now he gets the opportunity to show what he can do in varsity action. There will be no shortage of elite weapons supporting him. WR Tyler Fryman also holds D1 offers from Louisville and Notre Dame. RB Nathan Pabst has speed to burn and will line up as a WR. Junior WR Caleb Arrasmith also should have a big year and TE Bo Sowder is one of the top athletes on the team. The question for Beechwood is in the trenches. They have enough size and some experienced players to step in but the Tigers are rebuilding their line losing four starters. If the line comes together quickly, Beechwood's offense will be explosive.

Newport Central Catholic has one game under their belt, albeit a 47-14 loss to 2A Lloyd. That does not bode well for the Thoroughbreds as they take on the Tigers, the #1 ranked team in 2A. The top player for the Thoroughbreds is lineman Will Sandfoss, a 6'5" 280 pound two way lineman who holds more than 10 D1 offers and is committed to Marshall. Sandfoss did not play in last weeks opener. Hopefully he will be ready to go this Friday. No stats are available yet from game one.

This game will be played at Covington Catholic as Newport Central Catholic's new stadium is still being built. Kickoff schedule at 7:00 pm.

Thanks for the correction. I was thinking the series stopped with that running clock game in2021. I forgot about the one in 2022. That was an ugly game for Beechwood. They could not get their offense going in the first half. It looked like they were determined to work on the passing game and had a couple 3 and outs. When Beechwood went to the run in the second half they dominated the game the rest of the way. As always though, that pre-playoff tune up got the Tigers on track. They running clocked their way to the state title game then won the title with a 14-13 victory over nemesis Mayfield.

Missed a couple TD passes early in the game, fumbled on a QB sneak on the 1 yard line, and NCC ran a kickoff back, definitely a sloppy game for the Tigers.

BW early and often, Go Tigers!

Just to be honest NCC let me down bad last week. Like really bad. The QB looked shook and I did not expect that at all. He ran for his life majority of the time. Miles did make a couple very very nice throws but unfortunately NCC's skill players did not make the plays that they needed too with the slim opportunities they saw. These plays could have made the game seem somewhat different. #2 is nice for NCC but they are lacking in the playmaker department. Mixed with very sketchy O-Line play that one player most likely can't fix. That's not a recipe for success. I'm rooting for NCC I hope they figure it out, and fast for everyone involved sake. Beechwood 54-0.

What is the time table on Sandfoss?

Week to week it appears. Lots of young new faces up front last week. Great experience for district/playoffs. Really excited to watch the Freshman Meyer grow into his role. Great kid who gets it!
