Randall K. Cooper High School Welcomes Christian Stefanopoulos Prohaska as the New Head Coach of Girls Varsity Basketball Program

Union, KY – June 2, 2025 – Randall K. Cooper High School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Christian Stefanopoulos Prohaska as the new Head Coach of the girls varsity basketball team. With over a decade of collegiate coaching experience and alifelong passion for developing student-athletes, Coach Prohaska brings both an impressive track record and a deep commitment to building strong, empowered young women through the game of basketball.

Coach Prohaska has spent more than 13 years coaching at the NCAA Division I level, holding key positions at institutions such as Xavier University, Seton Hall University, the University of Kentucky, Bucknell University, and Morehead State University. She has served as both assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, known for her exceptional ability to build relationships, scout and recruit top talent, and elevate team performance. Her leadership helped Bucknell achieve one of the biggest turnarounds in program history and contributed to an Elite Eight run at Kentucky.

As a Northern Kentucky native and alumna of Boone County High School, Coach Prohaska’s return to lead the Lady Jaguars Varsity program marks a meaningful homecoming. Her personal journey—from playing high school basketball as a McDonald’s All-American nominee to becoming a nationally recognized coach—reflects the very values she aims to instill in her players: perseverance, integrity, and teamwork. Prohaska brings local ties and a deep understanding of the regional basketball landscape to the Lady Jags program.

Beyond the basketball court, Coach Prohaska is also a dedicated wife and mother. She
and her husband, Adam Prohaska, co-founded a successful AAU basketball program and share a lifelong commitment to youth sports. Together with their two daughters, Grace and Hope, the Prohaska family is excited to become an active and engaged part of the Cooper High School community.

Being chosen to lead the program Coach Prohaska added, “I am honored to be named the Girls Basketball Coach at Cooper High School. It’s a special opportunity to lead a program with a proud tradition of  success in the community I call home. I’m excited to build on that legacy, compete for championships and invest in the growth of our players both on and off the court.”

Athletic Director Randy Borchers added, “Coach Prohaska is the total package—experienced, inspiring, and rooted in Northern Kentucky. Her presence will no doubt continue to build and energize our program leaving a lasting impact on our student-athletes. She will continue to focus on student and player development focusing on the rich traditions of being a Lady Jag varsity basketball player.”

Coach Prohaska holds a Master’s Degree in Sports Administration from Morehead State University and a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science from Thomas More College. Her approach to coaching blends elite-level strategy with a nurturing leadership style, making her uniquely qualified to continue to lead the  Cooper Girls Varsity Basketball program into a bold and promising future.

I am assuming no head coaching experience and I also assume no high school coaching experience, wow.

With that said, congrats Coach Prohaska!

I think there is a lot of pressure here, if the girls take a step or two back then ultimately the Cooper girls are the losers of Cooper firing coaching Sullivan.

We have seen a similar thing on the high school boys side recently. With I believe Covcath last year hiring a coach coming from college with no head coach experience, and then Holy Cross’s boys program too when they hired Ricardo Johnson a couple years ago who was I believe coaching college before joining Holy Cross. With both of those hires looking to be very good hires so far. Plus honestly even when coach Holthaus first took over the girls program, he had zero experience coaching girls basketball and was always on the boys side. Yet he obviously hit it out of the park, even with zero head coaching experience, or girl coaching experience. 
 

At the end of the day I think it comes down to having knowledge of the game and how to teach it, and relationships. Which sounds like this hire she has all the knowledge and should know how to teach it. As long as she can adapt to coaching high school similar to how we seen the coaches on the boys side do recently. Then I think this has a potential to be a home run type hire for Cooper.
 

No matter who they hired, the pressure definitely was going to be on as they will be expected to win the 9th region again with who they have coming back. It also helps that Coach Holthaus is still there at Cooper, so he should be able to help her in the transition too.

I find this to be quite the contrary.

If you told me Sullivan was leaving the Cooper program, given the circumstances, with all of the baggage that came with it and including his relationship with Holthaus.. And they ended up with Holthaus - a proven winner in the building & program for the men’s - and coach Stef Pro for the womens I would’ve said praise Lord hallelujah.
 

If high school head coaching is a requirement for success then we have different standards. She has been around elite programs and walks into the building with a state contender. These hires have the ability to make Borchers & Wilson look like Kings - whether you like it or not.

I don't think we are saying the same thing.  Experience aside, if the girls program takes a step back, the girls are the losers. 

She was currently not coaching at the collegiate level correct?  Now that makes zero difference to me I am just clarifying.  Personally I think this hire looks really good on paper as does the boys hire.  If things work out in both programs the way they could, this will really make the whole Coach Sullivan situation fade away.

This is a home run hire for the Lady Jags!

So in your opinion what is a step back? It's really tough to keep stacking up regional championships. Injuries, a bad draw, a bad call, or a bad bounce of the ball can make a good season look bad in a hurry. I think there will be some good teams in the Ninth. Good luck young lady!!

However, I believe it was said that Coach Holthaus was interested in the Conner Boys job that was open last year. So I think it showed that he was definitely interested in getting back to the boys side of coaching soon, and possibly would leave to do that. So even if Sullivan didn’t leave, there was a possibility that the Coopers girls team was going to need a new coach this year either way if he was looking to get back to coaching boys bball. 
 

Even with all the noise over the last few months. I think at the end of the day it has worked out really well for all parties involved. Sullivan landed at a very good school he could do very well at. The Cooper boys program got a proven winner as HC, who also at one point coached under Sullivan. Then the girls program potentially hit a home run type hire as long as she transitions to high school bball well. With all the noise, I think everything worked out really well for everyone.

Step or two and we will know it if we see it.
