Beechwood had a lot of very good football teams before winning the first state championship in 1984.  Honestly, the 1983 team was probably better than the 1984 team but that is another discussion.  Additionally, we had Bellevue in our district and Bellevue was amazing back in the day.

So in all your years of watching Beechwood football would you say the 1983 team was the best team not to win a title? I have heard from a few people the 83 team was very very good team.

I would like to see 1995 Beechwood play 1983 Beechwood.  And the 1983 team was absolutely loaded with talent.  To your question, I would have to study it to offer a meaningful opinion but I do believe 1983 Beechwood would be in the discussion.

That was 1984, the 13-0 State Championship team.  And when we came out on the field for warmups CAPE was already on the field chanting, we want that Tiger meat, we want that Tiger meat, yeah yeah yeah!

WCPO Channel 9 in Cincinnati did an article on this back in 2017.  It is a short, good read.  From the article:

But it was the test scores that closed the doors of the Cincinnati Academy of Physical Education permanently in the mid-1990s.

I still don’t know how the Tigers lost the 95 state game to Mayfield. They knocked out their starting QB then a backup came in and beat them. The play that changed the game was the touchdown and 2 pt right before the half.

We blew the coverage right before the half and in my opinion Mayfield was a little lucky. 

Did luck favor a prepared man? I remember being in 8th grade walking out the front door of school and my dad was there to give us a ride home. That rarely happened bc we were a 10 minute walk home. The first question I had was “Did Beechwood win?”. My dad replied “no lost by one”. The fact that the Tigers was not the reason my dad picked us. Myself and one brother were excited, no offense. But that cheering came back to bite for the next 4 seasons ha ha. The good ole days when you could listen on the radio.

Loved those good old days too, but for us super-seniors watching live in the warmth of our homes with both refrigerator and bathroom close could hardly get any better.
