I went back and watched the first 12 minutes of the 2nd half just to see what Mark Pope was doing with that 1-3-1 look.  It was never really a zone, it was a matchup.  They went to lengths to make it look like a zone and were diligent to line up exactly the way you'd draw it up on the white board.  On the first pass they went man and stayed man for the rest of the possession.  That's where it got interesting.  Sometimes Oweh (playing the point) took the first pass and sometimes Kriisa (playing at the foul line) took it.  It was a brilliant coaching move because it burned time off of the shot clock and got the ball out of Nembhard's hands.  What was interesting on seeing it again was that they didn't use it nearly as much as I had remembered.  They played straight man to man most of that time.

This is what great in game coaches do, Pope will bring this to every single game the Cats play this season, love it and look forward to the next move he makes and very excited to be a rejuvenating UK fan!!

  • And can we stop with every game being a referendum on Calipari? He’s officially become the ex girlfriend you can’t get over. Calipari did a lot of great work but it’s time to move on (like he did).

  • Wow!!! I think that Pope guy can actually coach a bit.

  • Update from my seats.

Yes UK played only a couple of possessions in a true 1-3-1 zone and I am pretty sure they were scored on easily.

I think the main adjustment (I haven't gone back and looked at it) was Oweh ended up guarding Nembhard a lot more in the second half...

On one of the possessions it looked like they morphed from a 1-3-1 to a 2-3 but that may have just been a result of where Gonzaga's players were lined up.  I like when a coach has some unconventional tricks up his sleeve.  Just buying a possession here or there can win a game.  I'd say that it's good practice to always switch defenses if you have a short shot clock, say the ball goes out of bounds and there are 15 seconds left.  By the time they switch to the appropriate offense they're up against the shot clock running out.

I agree on the Oweh comment 100%.  He's athletic and his length made Nembhard's passes more difficult.  His teammates were also doing better job on defense as well.
