January 28, 200719 yr Heard some interesting things today regarding possible NFL rule changes. Some things being comtemplated or discussed: 1. Overtime rules may be changed but not how you think. The NFL realizes that coin-flips determine a lot of Overtime games.....so they are considering moving the kick-off line up to the 40 for overtime. That way if you take the ball, then you most likely have to go (from your 20) 80 yards for a TD and 50 yards for a FG. With that change you could even win the toss and elect to kickoff which no one does now. This one allegedy has a lot of support. 2. Replay is a under constant review (pun intended) with the challenge flag rules being looked at. They don't want to go toward a college system where every play is under review, but don't want coaches running out of challenges, so maybe some plays will be automatically reviewed (like fumbles). 3. Pass interference is changing games (as in the admitted mistake call on NE in the endzone that allowed Indy to tie it at 21) so the thought is to go to a hybrid of the college rule and allowed both spot (major) and automatic yardage (minor) depending on the severity. 4. Ties. Somebody finally realized that ties could be all sorts of headaches especially in the final weeks of the regular season. Although nobody really has a solution. 5. One foot, two foot. Even with replay this call takes forever because of the possession/ball control issue with the first and then second foot down. So there is thought of going to one foot, but others are afraid that will lead to to much offense. 6. Playoffs number of teams is always under review (Kansas City wants to add two teams every year) but Playoff tie-breakers could change. 7. Offensive picks and offensive interference have concerned some as coaches are able to design routes that screen defenders from the ball. 8. QB rules: Some want modifications on the "no grounding if outside the tackles" rule and on the low hit/helmet hit rule. Some want a "running into the QB late rule" along with the "roughing the QB rule" but that probably won't happen. Some things that have no discussion going were shrinking the goal post (NFL is happy with ratio of TDs/FGs), moving of hash marks, adjusting kicking balls.
January 28, 200719 yr I liked Phil Simms idea of having a 5 yard roughing the qb penalty as well as a 15 yarder.
January 28, 200719 yr I hope they make a rule where the defense can actually hit the QB with out penalty.

January 28, 200719 yr I don't like the NFL OT simply because a FG can win the game, how about this. If team A wins the toss and kicks and can only muster a FG team B gets the ball back and gets the opportunity to either tie or win with a TD, I'm tired of teams winning with a kick.
January 28, 200719 yr Not that I'm necessarily opposed or for this idea, but I wonder if playing a flat 15-minute OT period -- not sudden death -- has ever been considered?
January 28, 200719 yr I would rather see a full 15, winning the toss and moving the chains 40 yards to win the game is not what OT should be about.
January 28, 200719 yr Full 15 is what I would do. Moving a catch to 1 foot in is a horrible idea IMO.

January 28, 200719 yr My semi-pro team plays NFL rules and our players anc coaches have talked about this at several times. WE'd like it to go to one of 2 ways: Similar to Arena rules where each team must get a possession then sudden death. Similar to college but start at opponents 40 instead of opponents 25. In the first if Team A gets the ball first and drives down and scores (TD or FG), they still have to kickoff to Team B, at that point the game is sudden death, likewise if team A gets the ball first and has to punt away, once team B takes possession of the ball it becomes sudden death. This could still result in a tie in regular season if 15 minutes is played without a score.
January 28, 200719 yr Author I would rather see a full 15, winning the toss and moving the chains 40 yards to win the game is not what OT should be about. For some reason the NFL isn't high on OT not being sudden death. And the proposal for just continuing the game in OT where it left off in regulation has no support. And the proposal for only a TD deciding OT has no support.
January 28, 200719 yr The 5 yard or 15 yard Roughing the Passer penalty idea is a good one and long overdue!
