Belfry and Breathitt have had an interesting series that goes back a number of years. One of the great matchups I think of came in 2008 in the state semifinals when the two would meet. Belfry came in as a favorite and was expected to make the state finals for the second consecutive year. However, Breathitt would capitalize on several Belfry turnovers to pull out an upset to win 14-12 and advance to the state finals before losing to Louisville Central.

Last season Belfry would go 8-4, starting 2-3 before ripping out six wins a row to reach the second round of the playoffs. They would lose 24-22 in a tight one to eventual state finalist Bell County. Breathitt County started the season 2-5 before winning four in a row and reaching the second round of the playoffs before losing to Beachwood, who would lose 31-28 in the state semifinals to eventual state champion Mayfield.

Belfry has been known for their ability to run the football and have won many state championships doing so but with Varney back at QB we may see Belfry throw the ball more than they have in the past. Varney completed three touchdown passes last season against Breathitt. However, there seems to be even more optimism this year around Breathitt County and a great way to start the season would be to have a successful showing against Belfry.

Belfry won 48-14 last year and didn’t have a lot of trouble putting Breathitt County away. Of course, this is a new season and that can always change.

Hearing really good things coming out of Pond Creek.

Belfry returned most of their bodies on the line of scrimmage. Traditionally when Belfry returns a veteran line they get good results. Having most of their Front 7 on Defense back is really big as well. Belfry was very young and very vulnerable on Defense the past few years. Having the ability to be a year wiser, stronger, and bigger should bode well.

Belfry has some potential playmakers at the skill positions around Varney at QB, but this is where they are the youngest and smallest. If these young playmakers develop Belfry will be a team capable of a deep playoff push assuming their OLine remains healthy.

I like Belfry 48-20 in this one.

This is just the latest version of a very long history of games between the Bobcats and Pirates. Belfry holds a deciding edge against Breathitt, especially in recent years. I think the Pond Creek faithful are excited about this team and rightfully so. Looking forward to seeing how the game in the trenches plays out, and that’s where most of the expectations are very high for the Pirates .

 

The matchup between these two teams may have lost a little of its luster over the years, but anytime Belfry and Breathitt knock heads on the gridiron it’s of big interest to football fans, especially in Eastern Kentucky. 
 

When it happens on the night that the Pirates kick off a season of celebration of the 100th anniversary of Belfry football then you have to know it’s gonna be big time atmosphere on Pond Creek

The records show a slim 10-9 lead for Belfry, but it's really 11-8 on the field. As you may already know, the 1988 game - a Belfry win - was later forfeited by the Pirates. 

I like seeing these two get together, even if the intensity has slacked off a little.
