These contracts are too complicated to decide based strictly off total value and the length. The Bengals could structure a signing bonus, # of years, roster bonus, incentives, etc to make a compelling contract that could keep Higgins in Cincy.

Hopefully not because I believe Higgins is just as necessary as anyone there for the offense.

I'm sure that remains to be determined.  I'm sure if they want to keep him in Cincinnati, they will find a way.

If there was doubt in anyone's mind, the Mike Brown era is officially over in Cincinnati. Katie et al started to gain control with the Marvin Lewis hiring and his term as coach. The Bengals draft different now. The Bengals sign free agents now. Did you know the Bengals have the 3rd highest paid defense in the NFL?Look at the free agent offensive linemen they have signed. And now the Bengals have the highest paid player in the NFL.

SO, old timers, repeat after me ... the Bengals are NOT cheap.

Forget everything you thought you knew about the old Bengals. Things are very different now.

This! All these old narratives should be thrown out the window.
 

With that said even Mike Brown when he was controlling more things had no issues paying his QBs. Carson Palmer also signed the biggest QB contract in history when he signed. Paying QBs is the one area the Bengals have never been afraid to pay.

I don’t think this contract does anything in regards to if they keep Tee or not. Tee has the same agent as Bates, so keeping Higgins was going to be tough no matter what Burrow signed for. 
 

With that said I don’t believe Burrow and others were lying when they said Burrow had a plan to help try to be able to keep people. Yes, Burrow set the QB market like he should have. Now other teams when it comes time to pay will have to pay even more than that. 
 

However, I see Burrow as having a plan to eventually restructure when needed in order to sign players. Now that still may not mean they can keep Tee beyond next year when they Franchise tag him. However, I do think Burrow will be willing to restructure through the years to keep and sign guys. 

Remember, these contracts are always about the guaranteed dollars. So let's now take a look at the guaranteed dollar hierarchy:

Jalen Hurts ($179M)
Lamar Jackson ($185M)
Justin Herbert ($194M)
Joe Burrow ($219M)
DeShaun Watson ($230M)

- Hurts, I get striking while the iron was hot. With a shaky first year starting and second year near MVP, he made a calculated move to get it done now.

- Jackson waited a year longer than most would, but he had a series of whacky circumstances he was dealing with from his franchise tag, standoff with the organization, and injury concerns. You do wonder if he'd held the line for the Burrow deal, what it could have done for his final contract.

- Herbert, I get why he got paid, but has he exactly done? It is a gamble, but not sure what other option the Chargers had.

The silly Watson deal is the one QBs have been targeting. This shows the only two QBs in the league with the juice to bridge the gap are Mahomes and Burrow.

Is Trevor Lawrence the next QB up for consideration? Dak's lingering contract will also be interesting to watch.

I don’t see it being a gamble at all giving Herbert that big contract.  He produced at high levels and he done that while now having to work with his third offensive coordinator in four years. He is a top 5 QB in the NFL currently in the NFL IMO.

We can cite whatever, but at the end of the day, the Chargers are 26-25 (0-1 playoffs) since he has been at the helm.

That said, I think he is a big time talent and look for him to make the leap as an elite QB with Kellen Moore calling plays.

With respect to Tee hanging around, teams are able to find ways to make things work if they want to make it work. Chase is the dude though, Tee is replaceable. Or if he isn't, Burrow should be good enough to overcome it; hence, the contract he just received.
