Thoughts on 7 on 7 coming back in June? Also 7 on 7 at Colleges in June again?

Featured Replies

Just wanted to see now that we hopefully have Covid pretty much in the rear view mirror. I want to see what everyone thinks and possibly some coaches as well how you guys feel about going back to 7 on 7 in June and having big 7 on 7 get together on college campus's. What does everyone think about these?

Good luck getting basketball coaches to agree with that. As it stands right now, according to KHSAA Bylaw 23 Limitations of Seasons, noncontact interscholastic simulations (aka 7on7) can't start until July 10th.

Also, Bylaw 24 Section 2 has specifics for football and basketball. Basically: June is for summer round ball, July is for football, signed KHSAA.

I had someone tell me there is a guy putting together a 7 on 7 travel team made up of NKY football players.  My question was does that fall within the bylaws, anyone?

Charles Johnson's 7 on 7 travel team. I believe they start playing April.

Does anyone know more about this?

To my limited knowledge...

It would be the same rules as AAU basketball/softball/baseball. As long as a coach outside of a program is the one providing instruction, it would be okay. They just can't represent the school and the use the school's facilities, as the KHSAA catastrophic insurance wouldn't cover it, nor the schools own insurance.

What HS coach wants someone else coaching their kids?

I know, right? Hard to answer that. I'm of the belief no coach would be okay with a third party coming in to do something like this. It would have to be someone trusted, like a "friend of the program" type guy that actually has football coaching knowledge.

Otherwise, it is just a distraction. If it is just games without actual coaching, it's less than ideal. If the kids aren't learning skills that are useful to themselves and their team, I don't really think coaches would be excited for it.

Call be a skeptic, but I envision recess with one handed catches and 5 second pass drops.

Travel 7v7 is definitely growing as quickly as they can stack tournaments and teams it usually goes March - June. NKY has had a travel team(s) for about 3 years now (Charles Johnson and Team Tate prior). It's no different than AAU basketball in that is a different coach than their HS coach. Great opportunity for someone to make money ? all kidding aside it allows players to see a wider group of competition and the exposure side is picking up as well now as with any 7v7 translation to regular football can be debated.

So why not have HS coaches play at an out of state college or university hosting a tournament?

We should direct all 7 on 7 questions to the Highlands folk! 7 on 7 champions of the world last year!

First team formed in 2021 by Team Tate.
Barry Jones from Cov Cath was a coach and founder.  Pretty good list of players.

Thanks @Brcatz and I am glad to see my neighbor Barry Jones involved.

Didn’t Charles Johnson end up helping coach at Highlands last year? If so, is he still coaching there?
