Dylan Hammonds Grant County

Featured Replies

Dylan Hammonds pulls down 18  rebounds tonight in a loss vs Walton.  He is now the all time leading rebounder at Grant with 1256 boards which puts him around top 20 in the KHSAA record books.  The previous mark was set in the 1960’s.  He now owns the School scoring (2700+)record and rebounding.  I believe he is 2nd in rebounds and 10th in scoring averages this season.  Outstanding efforts in both areas.

Congrats to Dylan. He out works most players.

What a great career Hammonds has had!
I wonder how many regions would he be the unanimous player of the year in?

1-5, 12-16?  Maybe he will get some all-state considerations or KABC votes.  His season and career stats are as high as anyone out there this year.

His stats have been obscene for three years...

Love this young man's style of play.   He's a throwback front-line player, ala Willis Reed and Wes Unseld.   The kind of big men who KNEW you couldn't beat them to the rebound because they had ALREADY DECIDED that the board was theirs.  ALL theirs.

Hammond's opponents are often beaten before the ball goes up.

Does anyone know if there are any offers for him in college?

This is one I've seen, from last September. Mount St. Joseph in Cincinnati (DIII). Surely there are others?

I’m not sure if there is or not… take Kelly Neice from SK for an example. #1 scorer in the state with little to no offers when he graduated.

I don’t believe Neice went on to play anywhere, both absolute forces at the high school level but didn’t relay to the college level very well.

Whose record did he break?

would be a good get for a college program. I do know Alice Lloyd College has reached out to him as well.

He broke Dee Hamiltons record from back in 1968.

He’s 6’4 (at most I’d say) and the times I’ve seen him he was almost exclusively an interior player.  When I saw him, he was shooting I think 17% from 3 on very few attempts.  Granted, that was early in the season, may have changed (although I’d be surprised).  So, a wonderful high school player.  Talented in ways that usually don’t get much attention (beyond the counting stats that is).  Real competitive instincts, a nose for both the ball and the basket that is rare (and probably easy to miss). But the handful of guys who can make a living playing almost solely inside at 6’4 are very few and far between, and tend to be built much differently than is Hammonds (think Charles Barkley, or more locally Carson Williams).  You can be tremendous and still not have what it specifically takes at the next level (oddly Steve Alford from IU comes to mind, although for different reasons).

Seems like a good kid, hope I’m forced to eat some words down the road……
