Scripted Plays - Yea or Nay?

Featured Replies

Saw that the Cowboys’ first 15 plays tonight are scheduled to be scripted.  This happens quite a bit.

What do you think of the idea?  What would it take for you (wearing your coach hat) to go off-script?

Bill Walsh is considered one of the NFL's offensive geniuses and he scripted plays. I can't recall for sure but I believe it was the first 15 plays.

I like it. It gives you a chance to rep a lot of plays that you think will work during practice and also gives an idea on how a defense is going to line up against you on that day in certain formations when using a script. Then you make adjustments based off that.  Now obviously situational stuff can get you to go off script.

My thinking as well (uh-oh).   You’re probably not gonna call a post pattern on third and a yard from your own 14.

Unless you’re Johnny U not paying attention to Weeb Ewbank.

I think it's a pretty solid idea.   Gives you a chance to run through everything you installed and practiced.  See what's working and what isn't.   How they are playing you.  After the first dozen or so, you can riff it based on what's working.

Do tell sir. I’m to young to have seen Johnny U play.

Many don’t realize that not only did Weeb win Super Bowl III, he also coached Baltimore to victory over the Giants in “the greatest game ever played” in the 1958 NFL championship.

I have a great book on the subject.

I used to go the Colts training camp at Western Maryland College WAY back in the day.

Great story in the book from the’58 season.  Unitas got his nose smashed in a game and it wouldn’t stop bleeding until someone plugged it up with mud. When Weeb tried to get him out of the game, Johnny U told him “If you take me out, I’ll kill you”.

He didn’t look it, but he was tough as nails. Maybe came from playing semi-pro on fields littered with rocks and glass for six bucks a game before the Colts picked him up.

In my opinion Johnny U’s 47 game streak with a passing touchdown is the greatest feat in NFL in history. Imagine doing that in the late 50’s with the rules that were in place.

I'm sure there are audibles attached to said plays too.  I would think they are "scripted" based on the packages that is put in for your opponent to see what kind of defensive look they are giving based on the offensive formation.

Seeing how they react to motion or heavy sets, things of that nature.

Just a guess.
