This game wasn't quite as lopsided as the score indicates, and at the same time, Pikeville was clearly the superior team. They made the big plays when the opportunities presented themselves and the defense was sturdy throughout.

Raceland competed every step of the way and is clearly the #2 team in 1A. There's just little margin for error against Pikeville. Class 1A schools have to do everything right to keep it close against the Panthers and Raceland wasn't able to do that today. Maybe if they played ten times, the Rams would win one or two. But that's not how this works.

 

If you just take the score off and look at the stat sheet, you would guess Pikeville by a touchdown, a couple at most. They only outgained Raceland by 74 total yards. 

You would also think Pikeville had forced multiple turnovers given the yards/points ratio, but it only looks like Raceland had the 1 fumble. 

I can see how the game would have appeared closer than the score indicated.

In my opinion it was closer than the score.  

 

 

I always liked the people at Pikeville.  Super nice town.  Congratulations on the win!

 

 

To me the biggest thing that jumps off the stat page is 3rd downs. If Raceland wanted to pull the upset they needed to stay on the field (to limit Pikeville’s possessions) and get Pikeville off the field. That didn’t happen. Raceland goes 2-12 on third downs and Pikeville goes 7-11. Couple that with losing the big plays and it was a nightmare on the scoreboard.

1. Pikeville defeated Raceland 41-9 in the Class 1A State Final.

After the blocked/tipped punt on Pikevilles second possession. Raceland should of took a shot on 1st down and to the endzone. Pikeville went for the jugular while Raceland was just taking small cuts/being conservative. They got greedy on 4th down and went for it when they could of tried to get some points. Yes you may of missed them. But the score could of been at one point either 6-6, 6-3 still, not 14-3. Noah Wallace didn’t get near the touches he should have. 5 carries is not enough. Raceland ran 1 bubble screen. It’s been there bread and butter all season. Stretch plays where most run to the short side of the field. All you can do now is prepare for next year and work hard to get back.

After the 85 yard run on the first play, Raceland outgained Pikeville 140 yards to 103 in the first half. No it was not domination.
