South Warren (1-1) at Gibson Southern (IN) (3-0)

South Warren went to Hendersonville, Tennessee 2 Friday’s ago and just couldn’t get the offensive traction they needed to outlast a really solid Commandos squad that were really focused after getting walloped by Powerhouse Oakland the week before.  The total yards in this game were virtually even.  South QB Button played pretty well going 14 for 31 for 132 yards with 1 TD and 1 INT.  Jimmy Sales ran for 70 yards and 2 TDs and SR Keegan Milby caught 2 passes for 33 yards and a TD.  But on the last possession of the game, the Commandos defense was in the Spartan backfield too much causing too much pressure on Button thwarting a South comeback. 

South Warren was off this past week, so I’m sure they are itching to get back on the field and as it turns out on the bus for just over 2 hours north to take on the defending 3A IN State Champs - Gipson Southern.

 

Gipson Southern, located in Fort Branch, IN (about 40 minutes north of Evansville), are 3-0 on the year with wins over Terre Haute South Vigo (that’s a lot of letters on your chest) 27-20, New Albany 45-7 and Washington 57-20.  Their first 3 opponents have a combined 3-6 record on the year.

It does a great job of getting into the nuts and bolts of Titan football.  Long story short, Gipson Southern lost their Mr. Football winning QB Brady Allen (now at Purdue) and last year leading receiver to graduation.  6 return on defense.  So the Titans have some inexperience similar to the Spartans.

 

Its always hard to compare apples to apples with some out of state matchups so I turned to CALPreps to see their outcomes for some perspective as to the strength of the Titans vs some more known commodities around the Bluegrass:

GS 31  Paducah Tilghman 24 (3A)

GS 24 Boyle County 38 (4A)

GS 21 Frederick Douglas 44 (5A)

GS 27 South Warren 35

So CALPreps says this will be a great game!  What say you?

By looking at Calpreps ratings, South Warren is #10 in Kentucky and Gibson Southern would be #11 in Kentucky. Looks like a great matchup. I'll take South Warren by 7.

Gipson is a 3A public school in a 6 class

system in Indiana. They are not ranked in the MAXPREPS Indiana poll at all.

Gipson is a 3A public school in a 6 class system in Indiana. It’s a rural high school north of Evansville and the school only had about 700 students.  Compared to the 1,500 or whatever students South Warren has.
 

They are not ranked in the MAXPREPS Indiana poll at all. Nor other IHF polls.

Sagarin computer ratings have Gibson Southern #44 in Indiana.

The school is located in the Southern part of rural Gibson County (thus the name), about 7 miles North of Interstate 64.

Great write up and link to the article.  One quick correction, those 6 returning guys are on offense (not defense).
