Agreed on both accounts.  I didn't think he'd be playing anywhere next season but Green Bay.

I won't go as far to say he's overrated but if he doesn't get to another Super Bowl, you could definitely get me to say he's overpaid.

I think next week there is a deadline for teams to be get under the cap.  I wonder if they are holding this until they get some of the other cuts/restructuring deals done.  Then, if they still need another million or two to work their magic, they can still do it with Rodger's (move money from one year to another).  There's probably been a deal done, in principle, with regards to total money and years...but, how it's distributed could help the team depending on how much they still need to "cut" this year.

So just over a week since the story broke that Rodgers will resign for 3 years and 150 million and him disputing it, Rodgers signs for 3 years and 150 million.

I believe the original story was 4 years at $200 million, but that's basically the same thing, so a mute point that I might as well not even point out.

However, Rodgers got ripped by everyone last week for being selfish and only caring about himself because he was taking up so much cap space and the Packers wouldn't be able to sign other guys.  Major details were not in the original announcement, which showed that to be untrue. Those details explain how team friendly the deal was and that it cleared up roughly $17 million in cap space for 2022. 

But that wouldn't allow for the selfish narrative or Rodgers not caring about his teammates.

It is a five-year contract. The fifth year (and solid chance third, fourth, and fifth) will probably not happen.

1. 2022 roster bonus: $40.8 million, fully guaranteed.
2. 2022 base salary: $1.15 million, fully guaranteed.
3. 2023 base salary: $59.465 million, fully guaranteed.
4. 2024 base salary: $49.25 million, guaranteed for injury at signing, and fully guaranteed at the outset of the 2024 league year.
5. 2025 roster bonus: $5 million, due at the start of the league year.
6. 2025 base salary: $15.85 million.
7. 2026 roster bonus: $5 million, due at the start of the league year.
8. 2026 base salary: 10 million.
9. 2022-26 workout bonus: $50,000 annually.

The cap space thing I don't care about. I'm all for players getting whatever they can... that is the team's responsibility to work out the numbers. Do teams pay back players that outperform their contracts? Are owners taking discounts of their own? Hell no. They also have these weird restructuring rules that can circumvent the process. Rodgers' deal was most definitely "cap friendly"... which again, it's goofy.

I know you say you don't care about the cap space thing, but all last Tuesday and into Wednesday, that's all every talking head was saying.  They roll out the only teammate they can ever find that wants to bash him, Greg Jennings, and give him the platform to talk about how Rodgers doesn't care about anyone but himself and he made this bed, so enjoy laying in it.

I'm sure they more than likely restructure things again this time next year with him too.

I've quit trying to understand the NFL salary cap. Rodgers is still getting his money, it is not as if he is making a great sacrifice, but teams are able to massage contracts to allow more flexibility. Tampa is the best example. They had a plethora of players last off season that resigned which were due large pay days. They brought back EVERYONE. How they did it I have no clue. You can restructure deals to get lump sum payments, back load deals, etc. which all loosen a team's cap. Again, I don't get it.

If I understand, he should be pretty well locked up for this season and the next without much of a peep, but that third year, if he gets there, would be the first opportunity to restructure. Who the hell knows ?

I don't know anything but it seems like they completely exploit "signing bonuses" when they do these restructurings.

I'm biased towards Rodgers obviously.  Not so much because I'm a huge fan of him but I really liked Jordy Nelson, which then that turned into really liking Aaron Jones (my current favorite player in the NFL).  One of my best friends is a diehard Packers fan and since I was watching them all the time decided they'd be my team outside of Cincy to root on.  I think Rodgers brings a ton on himself, but I get annoyed at times with how the media comes at him for certain things like last week.
