Winter may not be done yet

Featured Replies

The weather on Friday looks to go from early spring-like temperatures back to winter-like.  Temperatures on Friday will range from the low 60s across the southern part of the state to the high 50s in the northern sections. Don't be fooled by these spring-like temperatures because it appears winter is coming back to Kentucky. We should see temps Saturday morning in the mid-20s. That's not the worst of it. Accumulating snow will be possible Friday night. A trough will dig down to the Texas/Mexico border. A ridge will be covering much of Kentucky giving us the warmer temps Friday. It will start to give way and the trough will move towards Kentucky bringing the winter-like temperatures. A low-pressure system is forecast to form near the Arkansas/Mississippi border and move northeastward in the area between the trough and ridge (white) towards Kentucky. It will bring some Gulf moisture into Kentucky ahead of the arctic air mass. As the low moves towards and through Kentucky, it will deepen and gain strength. The possible precipitation looks to fall as mostly snow.

This is the simulated radar. According to this radar, the snow could be heavy at times. Please note that this is just a snapshot in time and things will more than likely change as we get closer to Friday.

I will post an update tomorrow evening.

For this update, I'm just going to show what the very latest model guidance is showing for possible snow accumulations for Friday night into the day Saturday. Before I show the GFS and EURO maps let me say this. Do not take these as an official forecast. I just want to show what could happen. Things will change between now and Friday. One pretty sure thing is we will see some accumulating snows.

GFS

EURO

So everyone can see that the possible amounts are in question.  I should get a read on the possible accumulations by tomorrow evening. I may post my first call then.

I just received this from the National Weather Service-Louisville office. Check back this evening for my update. More than likely I'll be posting my first call for snow accumulations.

I just wanted to show everyone a map that shows the chance of accumulating snow in a 24 hr period. While it is using the 10:1 ratio, I normally use the Kuchera ration, it gives us a pretty good idea of the chance of receiving accumulating snow.

The first one is the chance of receiving >1 inch.

The second one shows the chance of receiving >4 inches

So everyone can see  it is a pretty good chance of receiving accumulating snow Friday night into Saturday. I will update everyone later today.

Here's my final call for the snow coming in tonight into the day on Saturday. First, the probability maps from the GEFS.

Chance of receiving greater than 1"

This is my latest thinking on possible snow accumulations. There could be areas that receive higher amounts, especially in the higher elevations.

It is really pretty, that is for sure.  Good thing I got everything done about 30 minutes ahead of the snow.

I just got off the phone with my son in Bowling Green. He said it has already started to snow there.

It’s been snowing in Louisville since about 4:00. Just light accumulation on grassy areas.

Some accumulation on my deck and in the yard in Crestview Hills.  Maybe 1/2 an inch.   But the streets are fine since it was in the 60s the last couple of days and 50 something today.

Same in Independence and it may be done snowing here. Haven't checked but it seemed like it was tapering off before the UK game.

Never mind. I was wrong. Still coming down at a good rate here and radar looks like it will be for a few more hours. I had a tape measure by my deck door so I checked it before posting my follow up. We have just over two inches right now on my deck.

Same in Florence everyone, it is a pretty snow but the streets look fine.

I just drove from Hebron to Taylor Mill and the roads were fine. There were a couple of inches of snow on my car, but it's not sticking to the roads right now.
