Southwestern at Mercer County Predictions/Updates

On the cusp of district play, the Titans seek momentum building win against offensive buzz saw and 5A contender

Records: Southwestern (3-0), Mercer County (3-1)

BGP Ranking: Southwestern (#6 in 5A), Mercer County (#2 in 3A)

Series History: Southwestern leads 4-2 all-time 

Table Setter: In a class stacked at the top with star power, Southwestern has flown below the radar through four weeks of the season. The Warriors are knocking on the door of the top 5 with an offense averaging a state best 57 points per game. Jason Foley's squad boasts a deep backfield, headed up by Tanner Wright, that averages over 400 yards rushing per game.

Southwestern hits the road to Harrodsburg this week to challenge its best opponent so far, top 3A contender Mercer County. The Titans have recovered from being blanked by Bryan Station in Week 2 to romp Anderson County and Western. The level of competition in those games was obviously sub par, but there's a lot to be said for gaining confidence on the offensive side of the ball, regardless of the opponent. A win here would send the Titans into district play next week against CAL with a surge of momentum at their back.

This matchup pits two teams with offensive mojo currently in their favor. A win for either team would be a big resume builder, but especially so for Mercer County. It would be arguably the biggest win by anyone in the 3A class and a huge RPI grab.

I like Mercer County’s team but I think this is just to much to ask I truly believe Southwestern is a contender for the state championship in 5A.

Seeing Southwestern as a playoff foe two years in a row, I definitely say they can storm all the way to the 5A Final Four. 

I expect a strong defensive showing by the Warriors.

Southwestern drives it down to the Mercer 20 but turn it over on downs after a penalty and a nice defensive play on a bubble screen. Mercer ball from their own 20, 0-0 3:48 in the 1st quarter.

Mercer moves it down to the Warrior 22 before a big loss on a reverse and a substitution penalty short-circuit their drive.  Buchanan pooch punts out of the shotgun and it's downed at the 1.  Still scoreless 0.43 to go in the first quarter.

Southwestern goes 3 and out. The Warriors punt is downed at the Southwestern 44.  Mercer will take over there to begin the 2nd quarter, still 0-0.
