The Spartans look to regroup prior to another out of state opponent!

The 1-1 Spartans will get another out of state visitor to Nashville Road this Friday as the Gibson Southern Titans roll down I-165 (a.k.a. The William Natcher Parkway and A.K.A. The Green River Parkway) for about 2.5 hours to take on South Warren in Week 4 of the relatively young season.

South Warren comes into this game having dropped a home game to someone other than Bowling Green for the first time since Covington Catholic (49-13 and CovCath would go on to run the table 15-0 & win the 5A Championship) defeated the Spartans in the State Semi-Finals 4 seasons ago (2017).  Very impressive run for South Warren.  The Hendersonville Comando’s earned a hard fought 27-20 win over Sparty by outgaining South roughly 350 to 200 yards.  The Comando’s played really good defense and only surrendered 67 yards on the ground.  The Spartan defense had a surprisingly tough time stopping the Comando ground game and gave up 257 yards.  The most rushing yards South Warren has surrendered in a long time.  I still believe this is a good game for South to get some of the kinks out and get them addressed before the district play starts.  Onward.

I, admittedly, don’t know very much about Gibson Southern, but did some research and found they defeated Columbus North 43-20 in Week 1 and lambasted New Albany 63 – 24 in Week 2.  This week they destroyed the Washington (IN) Hatchets 68-6!  WOWZA!!!.  According to the MaxPreps poll they are ranked #21 overall in Indiana.  Through 2 games SR QB Brady Allen, a Purdue commit, is 43 for 62 for 630 yards with 9 TDs and 0 (ZERO) INTs.  WOW!  Their top RB is SO Sean Delong with 224 yards on 30 carries and 4 TDs over 2 games.  At WR JR Cole Mckee has 14 catches for 143 yards and 1 TD and SR Rory Heltsley has 15 catches for 266 yards and 6 TDs in two games.  Top tacklers for the Titans (say that 10 times fast) are SR LB Levi Dickerson with 29 tackles and 4 TFL and SR DB Peyton Rodger with 19 tackles on the year through 2 games.

This will be the first meeting between these 2 schools.  I look for South Warren to try to start with short passes to set up Kobe Martin and the run game and then look to go up top to the Spartans outside weapons.  For the Titans, if you’ve got a horse, ride it!  Gibson has a D1 QB so you let him throw the ball.  Sprinkle in SO RB Delong and that could be a hard combo to stop, but South Warren has had 2 weeks to prepare for this game and I think they will be ready.  CalPreps says the final score will be 31-30 in favor of South Warren!  Wow!  Get your tickets now Spartan Fans!!!

Who wins?  What are your keys to this game?

Owensboro was scheduled to play them last year - good team.

I'll take Gibson in a close one. I think Gibson will have just a little more firepower on offense.

I'll take South Warren at home over Gibson Southern.  The win over Columbus North is impressive, but that was at home and although the other 2 were also blowouts, based on the competition, they're not that impressive.  Washington and Gibson Southern were old Big Eight conference foes and now compete against each other in the Pocket athletic conference.  Washington, which just moved to the Pocket this year, was long a bottom feeder of the Big Eight conference.  They are known more for basketball, by far, than football thanks to the Zeller brothers (Luke, Tyler & Cody) and Coach Gene Miiler (top 10 in career coaching wins in Indiana).  I think this will be a tight game, but see South Warren rebounding to grab the win with the extra week of preparation to help.

Hi Guys,

Hey, I had it right from the start, LOL

Gibson Southern is a 3A school in rural Southwest Indiana.  The school has an enrollment of approximately 700 kids and is situated in the middle of corn fields.  The school is the result of the consolidation of Fort Branch, Owensville and Haubstadt high schools in 1974.

Gibson Southern is ranked #1 in both the IFCA and AP Polls in 3A in Indiana.

My friend doesn’t mention the New Albany win above.  New Albany is a Senior heavy athletic 5A school in Indiana.  GS won that game 63-24.

Coach Nick Hart is 94-19 in his 10th season at Gibson Southern.

Coach Hart has done a nice job with that program and helping them get over the Memorial and Mater Dei hump although Memorial bounced them from the playoffs again back in '17 & '18.  I think in 2015 they could have won a state title if not for Indy Chatard and they would have had a really good shot at making the state finals in 2019 if not for their PAC foe Heritage Hills.  That was a good 2nd round game.  I think they easily win sectionals this year in a routes all the way through to the regionals and obviously have a good shot to win state.  By the way, I love the Haub House.  Great restaurant and loved eating there as a kid.  One of the best things in Haubstadt.

Snowy, wet, cold night for a spread team in 2015...I had a son on that team.  In 2019 missed the short field goal last seconds of the game when a player lined up incorrectly allowing the block.  My middle son was on that team.  My youngest is on this current team.  We don’t play Mater Dei (2A). We are 3-3 against Memorial in post season play in the Hart era.  Haubs in the only 5 star steak place left in SWI I believe.

I think it was the early 2000s, right before Hart got there where it was either Bosse, Mater Dei or Memorial that knocked them out of the playoffs.  Mater Dei used to be in 3A from around 2002 to about 2006 and they knocked Gibson Southern out of the playoffs 4 straight years.  We were happy to see Mater Dei out of 2A and sad when they came back, lol.  Regardless, I wish you good luck this coming Friday night.  Here's to a competitive, safe game being played.  South Warren has a decent QB of their own so hopefully there will be some offensive fireworks from both teams for those in attendance.
