South will be back, but I think Gipson Southern is supposed to be a good football team also.

Thinking Hendersonville had a lot of success running..  Triple option out of the wing T formation.

Gibson Southern is a solid program.  Their QB is a Purdue commit.  They used to be mediocre, but when the Toyota plant was built close by about 25 years ago, it really helped athletics in general take off at that school.

What class is Hendersonville in Tennessee? Are they among the favorites to win a championship?

I don't know how many out of state games they play, but I saw some posts that this was the first ever out of state win for the program

They're a 6A school, their highest classification.  They're larger than South Warren by about 150-200 students. 

As for favorite status, they are not currently ranked, but were in the receiving votes for Class 6A.  So I would say they would likely not be rated as favorites.

That in and of itself is unusual against South.  They've always been known for their ferocious rushing defense.

This was the first time an out of state opponent won at South Warren in the program's history.  And now, dating to last season's loss to Bowling Green, it is just the second time ever that the program has lost consecutive games at home.  They'll host Gibson Southern in two weeks trying to avoid their first three game losing streak at home ever.

Still, we all know South will be fine.  Other than their always tough game against Bowling Green, I'd be surprised if they lost a game to a Kentucky team before the postseason.

Hendersonville is 6A.  The top 6A programs in TN are usually Maryville, Memphis Whitehaven, Ravenwood (Franklin) and Murfreesboro Oakland.  Summit (Spring Hill) with UK commits Destin and Keaton Wade moved up to 6A after winning the 5A State Championship last year.  They will be in the mix.

 

We play Hendersonville Friday night and it will be our only game against a Wing-T team. As I’ve said before, looks simple to defend but if you aren’t used to playing against that offense it can be a challenge. 
 

 

 

Unfortunately, I think this game showed that South might not be as good as advertised. They're definitely no where close to where they were in 2018 when they shut out one of TN's top teams (Ravenwood) and ran the board on everyone else. The offensive line allowed way too much pressure on Veltcamp. Will they be good enough to advance through KY 5A playoffs? Maybe.

I really hope that Hendersonville is much better than what everyone had previously thought. South was unsuccessful in stopping the run, which has always been a hallmark for the Spartan's defense. They gave up several big runs up the middle. The offense just couldn't perform to the level that they should have either.

This is going to be an interesting season. South has its toughest schedule in memory and it doesn't look like its historical rival (Bowling Green) will be its biggest challenge, based on the Purples performance so far.

South is set to play Bowling Green, McCracken and Paducah Tilghman this year. I was expecting all those games to be tough. The question that I have is how can weekly performances by teams vary so much this year?

Paducah Tilghman beat McCracken pretty easily in week 1.

Bowling Green just nudged out a victory against McCracken last week.

But, Tilghman lost to Graves County in week 2 and Graves County lost to Mayfield in week 1, a 2A school. And they aren't doing that great this year either.

Most everyone expected South to dominate Hendersonville. Nobody expected Highlands to beat BG.

I feel like there is a tremendous amount of uncertainty in how good teams really are. There will be some big surprises across the state.
