Newport Central Catholic 42 Louisville Holy Cross 21

Featured Replies

Unofficially Joey Runion 28 carries 195 yards. 2 picks and 9 tackles. Not sure another player in the state had a better Friday Night.

4 Touchdowns for Runyon also.

It's crazy sometimes, the differences in the teams from class to class and even throughout the year. Holy Cross beats Holmes at Holmes and Holmes beat NCC at NCC handily...and NCC beats HC handily. And they're a couple of classes apart from Holmes. Football is a wild sport lol

Good win Newport Central Catholic. You get a trip to Paintsville next week.

Congrats Joey!

NCC looked GREAT tonight.

And NCC easily beat Walton Verona and HC was beaten by WV handily.

Honestly tonight was a great game through 3 quarters. NCC had enough to pull away late. Big special teams play and turnovers when needed swung the game.

J Runyon played huge for NCC, and NCC OLine played great all night   Defensively NCC held the HC rushing game under 50 yards total. Also got off the field on 3rd & 4th down all night.

Congrats to HC on a good game & season. Looking forward to a trip to Paintsville!

This game shows you just how important special teams can be in big games. NCC pinned LHC down inside their own 5 with a great kickoff and forced a 3& out which resulted in about a 15 yard punt. Game was never the same.

I think it would be unfair not to mention that the injury to Lex Thomas with the score tied at 21-21, seemed to stymie the Cougar run game and allowed the Breds defense to key on the quarterback Garraghty.  To me, losing Thomas was the game-changer.

Kudos to Mark and Kevin (859 Sports Radio) for making the trip to Louisville providing we NoKy fans the opportunity to watch the game.

I am not questioning you here Mustang but when NCC scored to go up 21 to 14 they clearly had the momentum in the game.

Nor am I questioning you.  I joined in late and it seemed that both teams were scoring on each possession.  NCC showed no sign of letting up, having scored each time they were in possession of the ball.  However, losing Thomas certainly deflated the Cougars run game and severely limited their offense.  NCC, with the help of some fine special teams work, dominated from that point on.

At very least, it was a factor that limited HCs ability to compete on both sides of the ball.  He was also one of their top defenders. .

Losing #27 did hamper Holy Cross. NCC showed that HC QB wasn't going to have success running the ball. HC only options after that was running #27 or throwing to #5. NCC defense and Special teams gave NCC offense great field position all night. Scoring 42 points against a team like HC is an incredible feat.

It was a shame he was injured. Great player. I think NCC would have still won but not by the same margin. Guess we'll never know now.
