Who was on the 95' Nebraska team ???

The team led by Tommie Frazier that beat Florida (like a DRUM) in the Fiesta Bowl. Also had Lawrence Phillips, Mike Minter, Ahman Green, Kris Brown, one of the Peter Brothers, Tomich, and Grant Wistrom. Also, of course, had the late Brook Berringer.

As a Miami fan I always liked those Tommy Frazier/Bollinger lead teams, I still remember the Ol ball coach lining up with 99 yards of green turf ahead 5 wide, what a genius.

'95 Nebraska is the best ever in a landslide.

I 100% agree and I also thought the Bama 61' team should have went further. That team was rated the best defense EVER in college football.

They were loaded that year and never had to throw the ball much. Their defense was as impressive as their offense.

 

I was thinking about teams that ought to be at least on an 8 team list to fight it out.

 

Other than '71 Nebraska and '95 Nebraska here is who I thought:

 

1974 Oklahoma. (11-0 but banned from bowls. Selmons on defense and the wishbone with Joe Washington)

 

1979 Alabama. (12-0. Balanced wishbone with rock solid defense.)

 

1986 Miami. (11-1. Testeverde and Irvin and company with a defense that was great behind Jerome Brown and Bennie Blades. Lost a heartbreaker to Penn State with 7 turnovers and came back the next year with a new QB and won it all vs. Oklahoma)

 

1972 USC. (12-0. Pat Haden and Mike Rae shared QB, Anthony Davis, Lynn Swann, Charlie Young, Sam "Bam" Cunningham on offense. Defense was tough as well.)

 

1968 Ohio State. (10-0. Super Sophs won Woody Hayes his last title with a grinding offense of John Brockington and Jim Otis coupled with a defense led by Jim Stillwagon and Jack Tatum. Beat OJ Simpson in the Rose Bowl.)

 

There are some others of the the last decade or so but most of us have already mentioned them.

Also an interesting note on that Nebraska team / teams - they won by running the football and with the option attack. Imo it worked then and it would work now. There was an intersting discussion on just that with Barry Switzer, Lou Holtz and Lee Corso. They in effect were saying the same thing.

71 NU was a great team and the game that year vs Oklahoma was such a classic maybe the best game ever. But in my mind nothing is close to the 95 husker squad. Talk about just beating the pants off of the teams on that schedule. The schedule feature prolly 3 to 5 top 10 teams on it also. That team was absolutely sick.

 

My favorite moment though comes from the national championship game in 94 where NU played Miami in the Orange bowl. Tommy Frazier had miss a good amount of the season due to blood clots in his legs. NU was losing to the Canes at halftime I believe an then in the second half Tommy took over for Brook Berringer and when Tommy came into the game Warren Sapp walked up to him and said "Where ya been Tommy?" Frazier replied "It's not where I been fat boy it's where Im goin." NU proceeds to make a comeback and beat Miami. Loved it.

Two things stick out to me. Tommy's HUGE run in which he broke 8 tackles on one run. And also one of the Peters twins that picked up a failed 2 pt conversion and ran it back and started high stepping. That was hilarious. But the '95 team to me was untouchable.

I think some people forget that Ahman Green was a freshman on that team and got in the game and had like 75 yards in the 4th quarter, or something like that. There's several quality pros from that game on both teams.
