I find this whole thing (which I consider media hysteria driven) to be an interesting thing to watch. The media plays an important role, and while you think this is hype, imagine the potential danger we’d be in if the media didn’t exist or was government controlled. Yes there is bad information out there. But where would we get the good, important information from if there was no media? I’d much rather live with an occasional overhyped event from the media, than the alternative.
March 15, 20206 yr This reminds me of the local weather forecasters calling for heavy snow, where people stock up on supplies, close schools in advance, and make alternate plans all based on what is going to happen. Sometimes they hit it and sometimes it fizzles out. This is unprecedented in my lifetime. I have never seen such a knee-jerk reaction to something before it actually happens. Certainly at some point in our past there have been threats equal to this COVID-19 thing, but nothing close to this in the way of prevention has ever taken place. I blame Social Media as fueling this hysteria. I also don't like being protected from myself. IF I choose to put myself at risk, than that should be on me. The Guru is right. It's a Catch-22, If nothing happens we will be told that our actions prevented it. I fear for the precedent that this will set and with the younger generation accepting this as the new norm, and expect repeats about every decade. Is not knowing about t a potentially bad snowstorm, and not preparing at all really a better situation than prepping for that doesn’t happen? Same with this. Are you really willing to risk your life or a loved ones life out of the sake of personal convenience? Sometimes knee jerk reactions save lives.

Understand that I would have been found dead at my table in the Zebra Room complaining about some little grease fire in the kitchen delaying the show. But, It's a flu threat for God's sake. There have been over 180,000 cases of the "flu" this winter and life goes on. The elderly and infirmed die of the flu and pneumonia. It's a fact of life. This has created a hysteria never seen before Take precautions - Yes! Shut down the world because of it - No!

This has created a hysteria never seen before Take precautions - Yes! Shut down the world because of it - No! Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. I’m not a scientist or a doctor, so I don’t know. If the whole world is taking these extreme measures to fight this, I’m ok playing this cautious as well. I get my flu shot every year, because the flu does concern me, even if it is a fact of life.

March 15, 20206 yr Local/regional businesses, especially restaurants, are at the top of the threatened IMO. I don't eat out often but I will seek to eat at the local places over the national chains throughout this crisis. On this point, fish fries are probably going to lose a lot of business tonight and through lent. There will be a lot of the smaller locally owned restaurants that will go under due to this in my opinion. My better half works in management for Cheddars and she was running some numbers this morning for yesterday's sales and customers served compared to the same day last year. Of 10 or so locations that make up her regional stores most were down 35-38% with the one exception being a location in Cookesville, Tennessee which she says is always an overachiever. Cheddars parent company is Darden and they do really well, so this obviously won't put them under. I could see this being devastating to the smaller restaurants that aren't part of national chains though.

You know, when people say that the younger generation doesn't know history I am quite surprised when I have someone of an older generation who would have actually known survivors of the previous major pandemic who fully dismisses something as "just the flu." 50 million in 1918 at the tail end of WWI dead not because of the war, but because of the flu. 3-6% of the world's population died in that Flu pandemic, more than died in the trenches of the Somme, Verdun, Gallipoli, Masurian Lakes, Belgrade, Jutland, etc. combined. 10 million died in the fires of the first industrialized war, 50 million died right after. I have 0 doubt that Covid-19 is not anywhere near as deadly as that one, which killed mostly the young and healthy. However if it is even 10% as deadly we'd still be looking at 5 million worldwide. It likely won't approach that, but the rate of infection is the concern here. But don't pull this "HYSTERIA NEVER SEEN BEFORE" malarkey. It was seen before in the modern era AND worse.

My comparison is rate of contagion, I have repeatedly stated that this will not be nearly as deadly. The comparison has entirely to do with rate of transmission, which this looks to transfer at least twice as rapidly as the flu. My family is not directly at risk, but we have parents that we would rather protect. I mean for what it's worth I wouldn't care if people who aren't worried got sick and died if it weren't for the fact that they can spread it to others who may actually care. In the end I hope this whole thing ends up as an overreaction because I would rather keep the eventual death toll lower. If not, well I guess I will keep an eye on good real estate deals after it's over.
