Split Title...any chance?

Featured Replies

Before you laugh, consider this scenario (and it's the only one in which I can see a split happening).

Michigan beats USC

Florida beats Ohio State

Who is #1 in the final AP Poll? I have a strong suspicion that unless Florida rocks Ohio State, the AP will vote Michigan #1.

Any thoughts?

It will boil down to, margin of victory and how impressive, if this scenario happens....plus a lot of debate.

Man oh man what a controversial year it would make ocllege football. Wonder how many split titles it would take for them to change the BCS to a playoff?

If Florida wins impressively and Michigan wins a close game, then I expect Florida will be unanimous.

If Michigan dominates and Florida wins a close one, then I think there is a strong chance that Michigan will get the nod.

If both teams win close games, I'd say it's 50/50.

I think there could be some backlash among the sportwriters with the way the coaches voting went down...if they get the chance, I think many of them will vote Michigan #1. And let me just say, I have no problem with that if things play out that way...I'm saying I think there is a moderate to strong chance it will happen if both Michigan and Florida win. Unless, of course, Florida tramples Ohio State, which is not likely, but you never know.

Who knows?

No one had mentioned this possible scenario and I'm wondering why. I know most people don't think Florida has much of a shot at beating Ohio State, but you never know when teams are off that long. And, if they do, I think it throws the door wide open for Michigan to share another title...

Is UM #2 in the AP poll right now? I think the only way UM does get to number 1 in the AP poll is if they win by a pretty big margin over USC and UF barely beats OSU. Because if UM barely beats USC, and UF beats OSU. Then I think UF would get it because they beat OSU and UM didn't...

You could be 100% correct and if the 50/50 scenario happens, you can be assured many sports shows will perpetuate that topic and even try to influence, some voters.

Excellent question.

I agree. When teams are off that long then it starts all over, like a new season. Florida and Ohio State have equal chances IMO. And although OSU has the upperhand right now I wouldn't be surprised if Florida made a game out of it.

Florida is 3 points ahead of Michigan for the #2 spot...so it's virtually a tie.

I think Michigan has a shot at getting the split...it may not pan out that way, but they aren't out of the picture.

And, again, I think it's possible there could be some backlash about the way Florida arrived in the title game among AP voters. They may choose not to go down that road, but it's a possibility, IMO. Of course, Michigan and Florida have to win first...

Just something to ponder.

If Florida wins a sloppy game (lots of turnovers, penalties, etc.) over OSU and Michigan looks very convincing over USC then there will be another split.

The BCS was supposed to cure the whole split championship thing but failed once in 2003 (2004 bowl games) with LSU and USC and could very well happen again.

Definite possibility. I don't think UM deserves to be in the title game, but if UF squeaks one out (late TO or controversial call) and UM wins big, UM will probably get some #1 votes.

I don't know if enough voters put them #1 though. Beating a USC team (even soundly) that has lost to TWO unranked teams may not turn heads like UM would want.

The ONLY chance UM has is if UF barely wins, and UM wins by a wide margin over UM. Even if that happens I still dont know if UM would get the split, because UF still would have beat OSU which UM didn't do..But that would be the only chance UM has at a split. But I dont think they beat USC, so it wont really matter...:D

I think the chances for Michigan are not very good. Let's face it, if Florida beats tOSU even by a slim margin, they will have done something Michigcan failed to do. Plus, poll voters may use an Ohio State loss as an excuse to re-evaluate the toughness of the Big Ten this year. Another thing to consider is that LSU (who lost to Florida by 13) will probably throttle Notre Dame, further damaging the quality of one of Michigan's few quality wins. I just don't see a split national championship as very likely.

I say, if UM wins and Florida wins, let the two play each other the next week in the Oops We Blew It Bowl for the true national championship.
