Breathitt seems to have lots of skill players, but can they stack up against teams like Somerset and Mayfield?

Collins is that good.

Collins should be considered one of the best RB's in the state. Lane Weddle is a beast and they've got a great QB in Jaylen Turner. Also, statistically they have a great defense. Only problem is their SOS show how good they really are.

Overrated is a slippery word in this instance.

 

I think #8 in the BGP poll is pretty accurate.

 

They will probably be a 12-0 team who has their toughest game against a pretty average Pike Central or Leslie County.

 

They are winning how you would hope they would and there is no denying they have some very talented players.

 

Now if we are saying are they overrated by the AP Poll? That is a different debate. I have a hard time putting them as a Top 5 team until we see them play someone.

 

I also have a hard time labeling them as a legit title contender until we see them play a team of some quality.

I know this for sure. I’ve been watching Breathitt football for 15 years and this is the best team by far, that I’ve ever witnessed them having. That are loaded. They have excellent receivers in Slaughter and Noble. They have one of the best RBs in the state and an excellent Defense led by Hogg and Whitaker.

Better than 09 and 10? 2009 was especially very good had a Division 1 Beast RB, Strong D and good QB. If this team is better than that team then they are loaded.

I heard that their QB got hurt?

This is just a opinion, and not knocking any kids. Everyone has great players when they're blowing out bad teams. If that's the case then Somerset Miller and LCA RB, Mayfield Stintson should be All Americans. My point is it's easy to look like a great players when your better then who you play, and playing the worst teams that are last place, Or second to last in they're respected districts. I watched them against Rockcastle, and have seen film. They are overrated and would be a #2 or 3 in district 1and 4. Until they beat a better team to prove otherwise, (and Leslie isn't that good either) they won't make it past 3rd round.

I think it’s nice that Breathitt is back in the after something like a decade in the doldrums.

I am spoiling my 2A Notebook a little with this for next week, but my biggest question with Breathitt County is their line play.

 

I am not saying they have a bad line, obviously their line is pretty solid for them to be dominating teams the way they have.

 

With that said, the big fish in the small pond theory makes me wonder what will happen when they actually play a team as big or skilled as them up front.

 

Line play is the great equalizer in High School football. A small advantage goes a loooong way when you have better skill guys.

 

That 3rd Round playoff game could be very interesting depending on the matchup. I have no doubt that Breathitt's skill vs. skill matchup can at least let them hang with anyone in 2A, but that line play will be the tipping point whether they will be a legit threat or a paper tiger.

... and I couldn't agree more! EKY football is simply better with Breathitt relevant and for a while that was looking like it might not happen for a long time.

So what happened to Braxton O’Hara?

QB Braxton O’Hair is out but the kid, Jaylen Turner that has taken his spot might be even more talented. He’s not quite as mobile but he has a lot better arm and can read the defense.

At the #8 spot in the BluegrassPreps 2A Top 10 I think is about right. Breathitt just needs to keep winning. The schedule they have is by possibly the weakest it’s ever been. But the only positive I see with there schedule is no starter should be on past halftime. So the injury bug may not bite them.

Breathitt out scored Middlesboro 43-0 in the first quarter last week. They played subs the rest of the game. Looking forward rod seeing how they handle a team like Somerset.

With the new playoff system they might not see them until the Finals. Semi-Finals at the very earliest. As of today Breathitt would host Walton-Verona in Round 3, FWIW.

 

I think most people believe Beechwood and Breathitt are the two best teams on the Eastern side. If Beechwood loses this week they may very well fall below Walton-Verona believe it or not for the time being.
