Archbishop Alter 14 (OH) Belfry 0

Defensive WAR.

Belfry defense shuts down the Ohio powerhouse except for a big play late and one drive early in the 3rd.

Belfry lost Isaac Dixon to a mild ankle injury in the 1st Quarter and he was unable to convince the staff to let him return. Without the big play ability the Pirates simply had no traction against the elite Alter defense.

Great showing by Belfry but now time to get ready for Pikeville.

Belfry

93 rushing yards

23 passing yards

117 total yards

Alter

57 rushing yards

9/20 passing 137 yards

194 total yards

Gutsy effort for a banged up Belfry squad with a rusty QB seeing his first action of the season. Obviously you want to win them all, but this result doesn't bother me in the slightest if I'm a Pirates fan.

I wouldn’t want to play Belfry, this is a really good showing. Good luck the rest of the way.

The key play of the game was in the 2nd Half and the score tied 0-0, Alter put a nice drive together breaking character and going exclusively to the air. The Knights hit their WR across the middle and Belfry lit him up and forced a fumble around the 35 yard line that the Pirates pounced on. The ref flagged it for a targeting/helmet to helmet hit (which was probably the right call), and as a result it set the Knights up 1st and 10 and they proceeded to throw a TD pass the very next play.

Belfry was still within striking distance late just under 3:00 to go and had the ball facing a 4th and 3 at around the Alter 45. Belfry, with two timeouts, chose to try and back Alter up with a punt. The Pirate defense had future All-American CJ Hicks seemingly penned in, but he reversed field and turned it into a nice return to their 34 yard line instead. Belfry forced a 3rd and 10 after burning their last two timeouts, but gearing up for another Alter run they sold the play fake and leaked their D-1 RB McDonald out of the backfield for the long TD pass to put it on ice.

Nothing but respect out of my mouth for the Defending Ohio Division III Runner-Ups.

Belfry's Offense was rendered useless and even with Dixon I am not sure it really matters. The Knights were big, physical, and well coached.

The good news for Belfry is there is noone on Belfry's schedule or in Class 3A like this Alter defense they will have to see again.

On the flip side, to make essentially the Belfry of Ohio flinch and break character and hold them to 54 rushing yards is unbelievable. Lots of things exposed for the Pirate staff to work on, and also a whole lot to like going 5 hours to step up in competition in a big way and still turn heads.

I don’t think Alter is a good as they were last year but when you lose a QB to an SEC school (Missouri) that comes with the territory. Still, a good ball club, I think they go back to the final 4 and we’ll see what happens.

Two well coached teams. Belfry represented Kentucky well.

Question for the Belfry folks. Does Belfry take charter buses on a trip like this? Please don't read anything into this, really just curious.

Nope.. Yellow school buses.

I want to say Belfry took charter buses one time under Haywood and it went poorly on the field so he said never again.

Belfry looks to have stood toe to toe with a beat from the Buckeye state and did so without their starting QB. That in itself is impressive.

They had their starting QB back this week in Brett Coleman.

HB/CB Isaac Dixon left at the end of the 1st Quarter with an ankle injury and did not return.

You can tell from how complimentary the Alter commentators are in their "end of game" discussion during the handshake that they were very much impressed by Belfry. Talks about how Alter is going to be "circling this game on their calendar now" when it comes to the rematch next year. "This was a great matchup of Ohio versus Kentucky...the best of what both states had to offer."

...'atta way, fellas!!
