Knowing the returner muffed the ball, does it matter if it is a punt or a kickoff?

No, it doesn't matter if it's a free kick (kickoff) or scrimmage kick (punt or field goal); the ball is dead as soon as the kick crosses the goal line.

Good to know !!

Wow... this is one of those rules situations that have the potential to turn a hometeam crowd nasty. Most casual football fans will think it's a turnover.

There are three characteristics of fans:

1. They do not know the rules.

2. They favor one team over the other.

3. They delight in antagonizing the officials.

Thus, a successful official knows how to do one very important thing and that is to ignore them all.

Very true, I'm sure !! If one wants to be an official he'd be well served to love the game more than a given favorite team.

What if it is touched by a player of the receiving team prior to going into the end-zone? On a punt/----still fishing

Interesting! Sounds like what I do when my wife speaks. Where do I sign up?

You didn't keep up...that's exactly what happened. A punted ball was muffed by the receiver. The ball ended up going into and through the endzone.

The officials gave the ball to the receiving team on the 20 ("touchback"). The question posed was...would there have been a safety if the receiving team had recovered in the endzone or a TD for the kicking team if they had.

The answer was...as soon as the ball crossed the goal line, the play is called dead and is ruled a touchback. -no matter who touches the ball while it was in play-

Touchback, period. Because the receiving team did not have possesion at anytime during the play. Touching the ball is not possesion.

I gotta jump in and defend the fans

1)Fans usually know the NFL rules or college rules.

2) That's why they are fans. They paint their face. They live and die with every play. I loved the atmosphere at the Male and Trintiy game.

3) They question coaches and officials and players and athletic directors. Officials are just easy targets.

I happened to be on the field( sideline ) for a Florida State - Louisville game in Tallahassee when the officials walked out on to the field. The FSU fans basically gave the slash across the neck sign and yelled " you're going home in body bags if you don't make the right call." Just ignore them and call your game. Fans love their teams. Understand that a referee usually grades out about 97-98% correct most games and that's a higher standard than a 60% completion ratio or Field goal percentage.

Didn't I say ignore them?

I remember someone on BGP a few weeks ago protesting this rule and saying it should be changed since you see many kickoffs landing in the end zone.

Touchback because no one possessed the ball in the field of play (prior to it crossing the goal line). It has nothing to do with anytime during the play, and all about anytime while in the field of play. Those definitions separate officials from fans. And both groups are wonderful.

Tell me how they can possess the ball and it not be in the field of play. No matter how

you want to phrase it what I posted is correct.
