No, it doesn't matter if it's a free kick (kickoff) or scrimmage kick (punt or field goal); the ball is dead as soon as the kick crosses the goal line.

offside

I thought the ball was dead after crossing the goal line only on kickoffs?...

DD...What you posted is correct, but one can be in possession of the ball with the ball not being in the field of play. The obvious example is a touchdown. By rule, the field of play is from goal line to goal line. If a player catches a pass in the endzone for a touchdown, he certainly is in possession of the ball and he's not in the field of play.

It's just that in the case we have been discussed in the endzones do not matter because once a kick, any kick, breaks the plane of the goal, the play is over.

I stand corrected.

Just seems odd that a play can be made not in the field of play.

I thought that during play( not a free or scrimmage kick) endzones were in the field of play. Not arguing or disagreeing with you just trying to show where my point of view was coming from.

You didn't keep up...that's exactly what happened. A punted ball was muffed by the receiver. The ball ended up going into and through the endzone.

The officials gave the ball to the receiving team on the 20 ("touchback"). The question posed was...would there have been a safety if the receiving team had recovered in the endzone or a TD for the kicking team if they had.

The answer was...as soon as the ball crossed the goal line, the play is called dead and is ruled a touchback. -no matter who touches the ball while it was in play-

oh yes , I still think if it were recovered in the end zone it should have been 6

Since it was the kick that caused the ball to go into the end zone, it's a touchback and not a safety. A muff is not possession.

any non scoring kick

I am glad you are a fan....

That's cool, but remember "should haves" are a lot like "ifs and buts"...
