Troy Smith...and the Heisman...

I think this is an excellent point....

There's at least one vote Smith won't get.

On his blog this week, Tulsa World sports writer John Hoover said Smith will "undoubtedly win the Heisman Trophy, thanks to ESPN's PR juggernaut. But he'll do so without my vote."

His reasoning? Smith "is a cheater."

"I have no room on my ballot for those who break the rules. I tried cheating once. I won. It felt like kissing a skeleton. Yes, I was getting kissed, but by what?"

Hoover pointed out that Smith took $500 from an Ohio State booster during his sophomore year and was suspended for the Alamo Bowl before being reinstated by the NCAA.

"Troy Smith cheated, and he does not deserve the Heisman Trophy," Hoover said. "Not in 2004, not now, not ever. The Heisman should remain above that and out of reach for those who don't follow college football's strictest rule."

I just thought of a question, I wonder if this guy voted for R. Bush last year for the Heisman :irked: :sssh: His (Bush's) family was part of the Pete Carroll Reality Co. housing plan.:sssh: :sssh: :D . Imo Bush deseved the honor last season but it just makes me wonder if this guy goes by "selective cheating" in his voting.

I dont think the Heisman vote has anything to do with wha happens off the field. Its who the best, most valuable player is. Right now Troy Smith fits the category.

I disagree with that. Would you want a player that is being charged with murder or some other crime outside of college football to represent the best of the best in the sport?

Troy Smith is very deserving of the Heisman Trophy Award. He has been a class act all season and has represented Ohio State and college football very well. Smith was touted as the front runner for the award at the start of the season and has done nothing to hinder his chances of winning.

Smith seems to have turned his life in the right direction and has worked hard to do the things that were required of him, so I have no problem of naming him the Heisman Trophy winner.

So he took $500 two years ago and he still has to pay for it? I don't think so. If the NCAA declares he's eligable to play, then he should be eligable for the Heisman. If the NCAA is ok with his time served as a punishment, that should be ok for everybody. Especially some no name writer in Tulsa or wherever.

RP, I find it mildly ironic that you posted this on here. Troy Smith made a mistake and took $500. We get that. I don't think anyone said the winner of the Heisman Trophy has to be able to walk across the Hudson River to accept it. Let's keep things in perspective.

However, when JJ Redick was at Duke and his "mistakes" came up, you said people were being harsh and unfair. In some circles, JJ's "mistakes" would be viewed more harshly than a kid accepting $500.

Just food for thought.

Troy Smith will win the Heisman and should win the Heisman.
