I was just listening to Lee Corso on Sirius radio on a college talk show I think Channel 122-123 for you Sirius listeners.

 

He made some interesting statements.

1) OSU has not played a team with a winning record since Sept.

2) Also said other then Texas; OSU has not played a team that was very good all year.

3) He also said he thought Michigan could run on OSU (giving up 3.3 yards per rush this season; 2.2 last year). However had better score in the red zone b/c OSU does a great job of holding teams to FG’s down there.

Why must every game that is #1 vs. #2 be the game of the century?? This is already like the 4th game of the century and the century is only 6 years old. I think that phrase gets thrown around too often.

 

Anyway, I think OSU is just too much for Michigan. As I've grown up, I've taken a strong stand in not liking Big 10 sports all together. I can't bring myself to cheer for OSU or Michigan. So I will resort back to my hope for everytime these two teams play. I hope they play 27 overtimes and they all pass out from fatigue. That may sound mean, but I just can't bring myself to cheer for either of them.

The 71 NU vs OU is the only one Ive ever known to be called the game of the century. Heisman trophy winner Johnny Rodgers punt return for a TD was nothing short of amazing.

 

 

Actually the '69 Texas-Arkansas game was billed such because it was moved to the last game of the regular season for all of football just for the centennial year. With both teams being unbeaten, ranked #1 and #2, and President Nixon flying in for the game (he gave a title trophy to the Longhorns in the locker room afterwards) it was every bit what it was billed to be for that time and era.

 

For what it's worth Texas was in the middle of a 30 game winning streak that saw them win both polls in '69 and be named champ in the '70 UPI bowl. Their streak was snapped by Notre Dame in the '71 Cotton Bowl. This was also the era when the Horns birthed the Wisbone offense. Oklahoma would soon adapt it and run it even better.

We live in the era of the Ohio State-Michigan rivalry. It has everything: top rankings, great tradition, compelling backstories. The game Saturday will be the pinnacle of all that college football fans hold dear.

 

(And my employer, which will be televising it to an audience that will be as big as any regular-season game in recent memory. I know this because my wife wrote the game time down on the kitchen calendar so that she will remember to watch it. We're talking big Nielsens).

 

The Ohio State-Michigan rivalry has every element of a great college football rivalry but one, the one that means it will never be the greatest rivalry.

 

When the game is over, Ohio State fans will remain in Ohio and Michigan fans will return to Michigan.

 

In Alabama, the losing fans have to go to work on Monday and face their co-workers from the other side.

 

When you can never let your guard down, a rivalry is a 365-day affair.

 

The Iron Bowl engages more people in Alabama than any other event, sporting or otherwise, in the state. There is no NFL team, no major-league professional team of any kind. The state plans its life around the game.

 

In 49 states, Ohio State and Michigan will win the TV ratings. But when Auburn and Alabama meet at 3:30 on Saturday, you can book that no one in the state will know or care who wins at the Horseshoe.
