I hate to hear this. I have been hearing rumors of this the last couple of years. I hope that Berea can build their program back up to where they can play on the varsity level again. I know in our (Raceland's) game with Berea their kids played hard and did not quit even when things quickly got out of hand. That fact alone says a lot for the Berea kids. Good luck to Berea in regaining a varsity football program and I hope to see you (Berea) back soon.

Amen! :thumb:

This is really sad. A few years ago Berea had a quality football team that finished fairly well in district standings. I think the problem there is that they have gone through so many coaches in the last little while.

It is my understanding that the administration especially the superintendent and the faculty are not big football fans. They lean more towards soccer. Coach Mills is a quality guy who needs to get out of there or he may never recover professionally.

Sad indeed.

I have heard the same thing about this admin. at Berea. I have a friend that worked at Berea College and he told me that all the people (school, admin. and fans alike) cared about was soccer.

I know Berea only gets a few players out on the team and they don't have a lot to draw from with Madison Southern getting most of the kids in the area. But Berea is an Independent school with Rockcastle just to the South and Richmond just to the north with quality football players in these two areas and there is no school district bound for Berea if a student can get transportation to the school. You would think they could be better than this.

I saw this one coming. Athletes in Berea either go to Madison Southern or play soccer at Berea Community High School.

Berea is a small school and support for any athletic program is minimal, but football especially. When Aaron Stepp was there, Berea made the playoffs and actually hosted a playoff game or two in the years from 99-01. When he left to go to Clay County, they have had two head coaches, Todd Harris and Warren Mills.

You can't place all the blame on the coaches at Berea, I don't think they have had more than 25 players in the program (frosh - seniors) at one time in the past 5 years.

You can talk about Berea playing with a lot of heart, but the fact is their program is terrible now. They have won maybe 3 games in 4 years. They weren't even competitive in most games. I know this year alone they were down 62-0 to Lexington Christian at halftime.

The youth football program in Berea is good, so maybe a few years of a middle school and JV schedule would be the best thing to try and regroup for this program.

I hope they can rebuild their program and be able to compete better with schools in their district and go back playing in the playoffs.

Soccer is king in that specific area, if you go to the top of Berea's bleachers which are really big and look 360* around you could probably see at least 15 soccer fields. The ADMIN. needs to learn what sport brings the money to the school.

This school needs to just drop the program and go with soccer. I remember going there in the early 80's when I was in grade school and they have a decent facility. They just don't seem to care about football. Except for a couple of years they have been a horrible, horrible program. With the current level of commitment losing this school in football would not truly be a loss for the state.

I was there earlier in the year and the field was terrible with patches of unmowed, high, crab grass. I did notice soccer gaols all over on the way in.....

I can't see why they are dropping out!!! It's not like the new district is overpowering. Probably the weakest district in the state a total of 17 wins combined. Berea 1 win, Campbellsville 2 wins, Lynn Camp 3 wins, Clinton County 4 wins and williamsburg 7 wins. I just don't see how this is gonna help them...

If they were going to keep a varsity schedule it wouldnt help but from what I understand they are dropping out of varsity competition.

I think it is all about their numbers - football can be a game of attrition and just having the number of kids is critical.

I also know their JrHigh (feeder) program started out with just 22 kids or so and ended up with only 16 due to injuries...this becomes very difficult to sustain a program without the attitudes and enthusiasm required to play.

This IS very unfortunate for the program...hopefully they will rebound from this.

I can see why they are. With the numbers that they had on their varsity team (only dressed 19 vs. Raceland) you can't even have enough to conduct an efficient practice. Lack of numbers and no support from the school admin and community imo have led to this. Imo if a community has interest along with the school this will lead to more kids having interest in football, your feeder programs really start with the L.L. / JFL level.. There is no way that a person can blame the coach or coaches on this. I sincerely hope that Berea can rebuild a h.s. varsity fotball program in the future. The report said that they will continue to play on a jr. varsity and jr. high level and that is good. Good luck to Berea in rebuilding football.
