Berea Drops out of District Play for Next Year

Featured Replies

Congradulations to the Principal, he has done a fine job of running this program into extinction. I have been watching this school and talking to people from there. From the teachers I talk to in the school the administration has made this a terrible place for teachers and coaches, just consolidate with Madison Southern if you ask me.

I saw this one coming. Athletes in Berea either go to Madison Southern or play soccer at Berea Community High School.

Berea is a small school and support for any athletic program is minimal, but football especially. When Aaron Stepp was there, Berea made the playoffs and actually hosted a playoff game or two in the years from 99-01. When he left to go to Clay County, they have had two head coaches, Todd Harris and Warren Mills.

You can't place all the blame on the coaches at Berea, I don't think they have had more than 25 players in the program (frosh - seniors) at one time in the past 5 years.

You can talk about Berea playing with a lot of heart, but the fact is their program is terrible now. They have won maybe 3 games in 4 years. They weren't even competitive in most games. I know this year alone they were down 62-0 to Lexington Christian at halftime.

The youth football program in Berea is good, so maybe a few years of a middle school and JV schedule would be the best thing to try and regroup for this program.

Actually there have been 3. Mike McNabb the current Coach at Rockcastle Middle School took over for Stepp for 2 years prior to the hiring of Todd Harris. There have been 4 different Head Coaches there since Anthony Barsch left after the 1997 season.

I hate to see the Program falling to this level because I know Coach Mills has put an incredible effort into the program, as have many other coaches, both head coaches and assistants, as well as all the kids who have come through there in the last 15 years.

I will always remember the year that we took 13 healthy players to play Beechwood in the first round of the 1996 playoffs, then got a return trip in 1997. Thank goodness Mike Yeagle and his staff were running a very classy program during that time.

Aaron Stepp did as good a job at Berea as anybody could have while he was there. It seems after he left, most of the support left too.

Good Luck to Coach Mills and the Players at Berea. Keep fighting for your program. It is worth it.

I thought if you dropped out of district play you had to stay out for 4 years, before you could come back?

You can come back at the next realignment. Sometimes that is four years, but sometimes its only two. The current alignment is 2007-08, so Berea should be able to return to district play beginning with the 2009 season.

Berea should be able to at least field a competitive team for district play. I think this is a sign of administration "giving up" eventually trying to cut out the football program all together.

Expectations have never been high. They have never been expected to go 10-0 or even 7-3. The years they made it to the first round of the playoffs and got crushed by Beechwood or NCC were victories for the small school. They are like UK football in a way: hope for 6 wins and a bowl (playoffs in Berea's case) and everyone would be pleased and all goals accomplished.

They haven't exactly been playing murderer's row of a schedule these past few years either. Throw out Lexington Christian and Raceland, and you are left with Bath County, Fairview, Paris, and Nicholas County. The district they were going to be in next season is pretty bad too. If Berea can't compete with these teams, they can't compete with anyone in the state.

I just have a feeling that a year or two of JV football and even less administration/community support is going to lead to Berea doing away with football all together.

I am afraid that you are right Bear but I am hoping that they can bring a football program back. W/O Admin., community and fan support you have no program and the only losers are the kids that want to play football. Fairview did this for a few years (dropped district/ varsity football) and played on the lower levels for a couple of years and they were able to bring back a varsity program. I hope that Berea can do the same.

Lynn Camp only had 22 kids on the team that went to the State Semi-Finals vs. Beechwood in 2003, so while I understand about numbers, it is class A ball and 20 -25 kids can bond together and make noise with the right guidance and backing. It sounds like the backing may be missing in Berea.

Good Luck to the Pirates and may they have a speedy return.

Berea High School has dropped out of district play for 2007-08 and will field only a Middle and JV team.

I just talked with one of Berea's coaches and he said that its not true. They will be playing a varsity schedule next year.

I hate to see that soccer is taking over there. We have similiar problems with soccer trying to take over our football field during the season. Soccer is gaining popularity but it is very seldom that I hear people planning tailgate parties and showing the excitment that you see at a football game. This is the USA not Europe. Our form of football is the way the sport was intended to played and watched.

Berea sent info today to Wburg and I think all district teams that they would not compete in district. When contacted by Wburg to see if they were still playing the scheduled varsity game , Wburg was told Berea was only playing a Middle and JV schedule...Berea needs to get their stuff together...I know Wburg has being trying today to fill the open spot...

Maybe Wburg Can add Whitley or Corbin in the open date.....That would bring in a nice gate and a huge crowd. Of Course McCreary is an option as well. This will be Coach Herron's schedule. I think it will truly show what he and his staff have in mind for the Jackets.

You can still play a varsity schedule, but not be in a district. Can anyone confirm whether this is the case for Berea?

I can't see why they are dropping out!!! It's not like the new district is overpowering. Probably the weakest district in the state a total of 17 wins combined. Berea 1 win, Campbellsville 2 wins, Lynn Camp 3 wins, Clinton County 4 wins and williamsburg 7 wins. I just don't see how this is gonna help them...

Lynn Camp was having a down year ecpect them to bounce back.
