As the owner of many small business'...all increasing the min wage does is drive the cost of business up. While I have no one making min wage now I will have to raise their pay when min wage is raised. All this will cause us to do is get leaner and find out where we can eliminate labor. As any business owner will tell you...your highest percentage of overhead is labor and this just drives your cost up. And with taxes and benefits based on a % this drives those up as well.

 

I can tell you this as a business owner...this will eliminate jobs...right or wrong. While most do not see this as a significant cost, it is when you are working off margins.

Smaller businesses are the ones, imo, that are affected the most.

I find it hard to believe that anyone actually thinks that oil companies-or any companies for that matter-actually pay taxes.

 

The federal and state governments already tax the crap out of gasoline and diesel fuel, at the pump... the oil companies don't pay one penny of those taxes... we do.

 

The same is true for taxes levied upon corporate profits. Yes, technically the corporations do write big checks to the government to pay taxes, but it's the consumers of that corporation's goods and services that bite the bullet with higher prices for those goods to cover the costs.

 

By taxing corporations more aggressively, the increase in taxes reduces corporate profits effectively robbing dividends and profits from investors in that company's stocks. Sure you want to stick it to the handful of fat cats sitting on a small mountain Exxon or Chevron or Texaco stock, but the vast majority of investors are small investors whose retirement and 401k depends upon wise and profitable investments.

 

When we put the screws to big corporations, we're really just putting the screws to each other... teachers, firemen, police officers, steel workers... you name it, there aren’t many pension or retirement funds worth their salt that don't own some Blue Chip stocks.

 

They didn't get to be Blue Chips by losing money.

 

The other point here is that by restricting exploration, drilling and pumping of oil as well as the building of new refineries here in the good old US of A, our government has eliminated much of the cost of doing business for the big oil companies, thus beefing up profits.

 

It’s really not all that complicated.

In terms of minimum wage, the insult here is that anyone has to work for the lowest wage decreed by government.

 

It doesn't matter whether the minimum wage is $1 or $10, the market will quickly adjust to compensate, thus nullifying all temporary perks.

 

Raising the minimum wage is about as effective as treating the flu with aspirin. It may provide minor, temporary relief of certain symptoms, but it's not going to cure the actual sickness.

I think its amazing that the people who are making $160,000 a year don't want to raise the wages of people making $5.00 something an hour. That's the new America for ya, get what ya can and don't look back.

Those congressmen making that $160 a year represent us middle class schleps who will end up paying for this raise. The new America is just like the old one. Opportunity exists for everyone willing to work for it. Nothing has changed.

I'm just not sure I get how any human being of conscious can oppose this move. I absolutely understand opposing many of the social agendas pushed by the more liberal wing of the party, but comon, minimum wage going up "a little"?

 

How many Mom and Pops get pushed out of business if this happens? I think basically none. The employers who pay minimum wage are the biggest of the big, and even then only in rural/depressed areas.

 

Keep in mind that 99 was the last time the minimum wage went up. Since then, many of the workers that rely on a 40 hr week at Wendy's etc have recieved basically the same pay while gas has DOUBLED in cost.

 

Unless you own a business that relies on minimum wage labor, how could you oppose this?

 

Again, assuming the states do not reconfigure the criteria on which they base who gets state assistance, an increase in the minimum wage just shifts the burden from the state to the richest corporations in the country.

 

It is not a matter of running people out of business. It is merely a matter of the government controlling what Americans do as individual business owners. If you do not like the amount of money you are being paid for a job, move on to the next job. If employers are not paying enough, they will not have any employees. Therefore they will be required to raise the wage that they offer. These are some of the most basic principles of economics.

Any person that has taken Economics 101 knows all raising the minimum wage does is retard job growth. And ask yourself this, how many people do you know besides kids that really makes $5.15 an hour in todays workforce. Very few I would assume, all this topic does is create a fillibuster for the Democrats to ignite people whose economic wisdom is low!
